PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TURKISH AS
A NATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING AND BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS
Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine problems encountered in developing the basic
language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in teaching Turkish as a
native language. There is a method problem in teaching
Turkish as a native lan-
guage. Eventually, when teaching Turkish as a language, teaching the rules of lan-
guage is the focus subject more than the skills. Issues like encouraging learners’
desire to learn the lesson,
applying linguistic activities, using literary texts in teach-
ing Turkish, developing linguistic, personal and social skills are the current issues
of teaching native language. In this context a questionnaire
about problems encoun-
tered of in developing the essential four skills was prepared and carried out with
171 undergraduates. The findings were evaluated and analysed by means of SPSS
(descriptive statistics). The result indicates that the
necessary importance for de-
veloping the basic four skills at primary and secondary schools was ignored in
Turkish classes, and grammar topics were taught predominantly instead. In addi-
tion it was understood that the current Turkish language teaching program does not
create strong awareness of individuals’ native language.
