old, and she’s from
Moscow in Russia. Kiara

The Russian Winter
Festival takes place
every year in Moscow, in
December and January.
Moscow is very cold in the winter, and there’s
a lot of snow. There are a lot of fun activities
at the festival. You can go on a troika ride
through the snow. Or you can go ice-skating
in the city. There are also lots of beautiful
snow sculptures.
At night, you can watch the fireworks. Or
you can go and see a show with traditional
singers and dancers. Look out for Kiara!

Answer the questions.

What kind of art has many small tiles?

What can the tiles be made of?

Where were there very old mosaic floors?

Why do artists make mosaics today?
There are lots of different mosaics in countries
around the world. Mosaics are made of many
small tiles. These tiles are different shapes and
colors, and are made of ceramic, glass, paper,
or stones, like marble.
Artists put glue on mosaic tiles and then make
pictures or patterns with them. Sometimes artists
glue the tiles onto cardboard first, then stick the
cardboard with the mosaics onto walls, floors,
and roofs.
In the past, mosaics in Roman gardens and baths
were made of round stones or shells. Today,
artists make mosaics for places like train stations
and shopping malls to make them look beautiful.
