sPanisH suBject («tHe sPanisH case») in tHe neWsPaPer «st. PetersBurg vedoMosti» in 1856-1857
The article is devoted to the history of the Russian-Spain relations in 1856-1857. «The Spanish case» held in 1856-
1857, a prominent place on the pages of the oldest newspaper of the Russian Empire «St. Petersburg Vedomosti»,
which in this period from a purely academic turned into a social-political. In the materials published in this
newspaper, reflected the Russian view on the political situation in this Iberian country, attempts to make changes
in the foreign policy of Spain, made its political elite in the presence of a disagreement on the Spanish question
between England and France, and changes in Russian foreign policy after the Crimean war. Particularly great
attention in the Russian media has been paid to the lighting of the recovery process of the Russian - Spanish dip-
lomatic relations, suspended in 1833 due to the recognition by the Russian side heritable Isabella on the Spanish
throne, and to the formation of a new phase in relations between the two countries.
Key words: Spain, Russia, Alexander II, Isabella II, foreign policy, Russian-Spanish relations, the Russian press.
