Impact on concepts and capabilities 
 
There is no doubt that social media played a serious role in starting the fires of revolution 
once they were lit. Largely beyond the control of Government suppression, these platforms for the 
first time allowed protestors to plan, organize and execute their protests, to create and sustain a 
feeling of unity that was vital in maintaining them. Crucially, they ensured that revolutionary power 
was so diffuse that normal methods of government control could not stop it. Moreover, when they 
tried to, it backfired. When the Egyptian authorities shut off the internet and mobile networks for 
five days from 28
th 
of January 2011, this simply forced yet more protestors out onto the streets. As a 
result, a very real mass body of protestors united in opposition [7]. Once revolution was underway, 
social media provided a crucial alternative voice. The internet has created a new language and

ability for ordinary people to create and sustain in the new environment. Internet and social media 
can prove to be effective information warfare and information operation capabilities since they 
allow their users to obtain considerable results [8]: 
- 
both in the strategic and tactical fields; 
- 
in a domain (cyber space) which is different from traditional military ones (ground, sea, air 
space); 
- 
on dimensions which are different from war, strictly speaking (e.g. psychological, 
anthropological, cultural, media, perceptive dimension); 
- 
not only against military targets, but also against social society (as a whole or referring to 
specific ethnic, religious, cultural or professional communities) and a state’s critical infrastructures 
(strategic-relevant companies, telecommunication networks, banking systems, etc.). 
To reach significant results without investing a lot of means (their accessibility and cheapness 
have been mentioned above); for example, using such tools it is possible to rapidly share an 
extremely high number of content and information with a huge number of receivers at a bizarre 
cost.
