IF YOU ARE UNDER A VOLCANO WARNING:

  • Listen for emergency information and alerts.

  • Follow evacuation or shelter orders. If advised to evacuate, then do so early.

  • Avoid areas downstream of the eruption.

  • Protect yourself from falling ash.

  • Do not drive in heavy ash fall.

Other more common natural disasters of geological nature are rockslides and landslides.

A landslide is the detachment and catastrophic fall of large masses of rock, toppling, crushing and rolling over steep and precipitous slopes.
Landslides of natural origin occur in mountains, on seashores and river valley bluffs. They occur as a result of the loosening of rock cohesion due to weathering, erosion or dissolution and the action of gravity.
A landslide is the movement of rock masses down a slope due to its own weight and additional stress caused by erosion, waterlogging, seismic shocks and other processes. They also occur on sharp edges.
As a result of landslides and rockslides, buildings and structures collapse, destruction of human settlements, agricultural land, overlapping of river channels, alteration of the landscape and loss of human and animal life.
Because of the cumulative impact of the above factors in the mountainous and foothill areas of the country, landslides are major processes that are actively developing and threatening economic facilities.
The most dangerous landslide area in Baku is the Bail area, where in 1990 a landslide increased by heavy rains and destroyed several buildings in the Caspian Fleet military base in the area so quickly that people could not get out. It is more developed in the south-eastern tip of the Greater Caucasus, on the north-eastern and southern slopes, in the Lesser Caucasus and in the Talysh Mountains. The formation of landslides is associated with the loss of stability of the rocks composing the slope. The loss of stability occurs as a result of increasing slope gradient (the slope gradient increases as the lower part of the slope is flushed with water), aggradation of the slope by sedimentary materials and reduction of rock balance.
