Hand-coloured engraving, 43x54,5cm
AMSTERDAM c. 1683
RARE AND A MOST DECORATIVE SEA CHART OF SCANDINAVIA, THE NORTH, THE BARENTS SEA AND
RUSSIA.
There are two detailed insets of Spitsbergen, “Hollandse Bay” (Spitsbergen) and a map of Jan Mayen.
The sea charts signed by Robijn are rarely seen. It seems he acquired copper plates from P. Goos used in his “Zee –
Spiegel” and “Zee – Atlas”. A similar chart is known signed by Van Loon but our Robijn chart has been extended c. 3,5
degrees north compared to this (see Ginsberg. The chart by Robijn is not listed in Ginsberg).
Upper margin cropped c. 1cm affecting the insets. Restored tear in lower right corner.
Literature: W.B. Ginsberg “Sea Charts of Norway 1585 – 1812” see page 85
