A SET OF FOUR, A MASTERPIECE WITHIN CARTOGRAPHIC ODDITIES

Besides his large production of maps and other printed plates, Matthäus Seutter (Augsburg 1678 – 1757) is famous

for making a splendid set named “The Colossus series” published in Nuremberg c. 1730. In tabular form they give

information of the pope in full robes, covered with a list of all the popes from the first to the seventeenth century; a

warrior king in brilliant black robes, covered with text listing kings of the various countries of Europe from the first to

seventeenth century; and an “Elector” in full robes, covered with text listing all the rulers and major nobles from the Holy

Roman Empire.

The set is excellent.

78.  MATTHÄUS SEUTTER

“Colossus Monarchic Statua Danielis”

Contemporary hand-coloured engraving, 57x49cm

AUGSBURG  c. 1730

The figure of Colossus, with sword and scepter, represents Daniel’s

interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (Da. 2:39-40). He was a

powerful Babylonian king who conquered Judea during the sixth century

B.C. In the Biblical story, the king dreams of a mighty image with a head of

gold, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs of iron, and

feet of iron and clay. Daniel, a Jew exiled in Babylon, interprets the image

to represent once and future kingdoms, with Nebuchadnezzar as the head

of gold. The plate depicts the four kingdoms as Assyrian, Persian, Greek,

and Roman. The Colossus’s Western leg includes the German and Austrian

realms.

A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF AN

IMPORTANT EARLY MAP OF

THE NORTH COMPILED BY

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT

MAP PUBLISHERS OF THE 16TH

CENTURY.

Cartographically it is based on the

J. Ziegler map (see entry 50), but

extends further north to show an

Arctic ocean. There are only two

issues of the first Münster map. The

differences are just small alterations

in the text as well as to the leaves

before and after the title. Already in

1544 it was replaced by a new map

now based on Olaus Magnus and his

“Carta Marina” (see entry 18).

Literature: W. B. Ginsberg “Printed Maps

of Scandinavia and the Arctic 1482 - 1601”

HEIGHTENED IN GOLD

Johannes Flintoe “Lørdagsfrieri”

En av kunstnerens mest berømte laveringer

(Tidligere Koppangtunet Hotell)

Her kan også viktige kulturelle gjenstander

vedrørende Østerdalen og våre fjellområder komme i sitt

rette miljø.

Med vennlig hilsen

Pål Sagen
