Description

Preservation

Digital materials are vulnerable to obsolescence, technical failure, and data loss. Therefore, it is crucial to develop long-term preservation strategies and standards to ensure that digitized materials are accessible and usable in the future.

Intellectual Property and Copyright

Many cultural institutions hold collections that are subject to copyright restrictions. Digitization can raise legal and ethical issues, such as how to balance access to cultural heritage with the rights of copyright holders.

Cost and Resources

Digitization can be a time-consuming and expensive process, requiring specialized equipment, expertise, and funding. This can be a significant barrier for smaller institutions with limited resources.

Examples of national policies for the conservation of digital cultural assets are shown in Table 1. By establishing a framework for the preservation, protection, and administration of digital cultural material, national policies play a significant role in its conservation. The table provides a list of national policies, including those from the National Digital Stewardship Alliance in the US and the Digital Archive Promotion Project in Japan185.
Table 2 lists the benefits of digital cultural heritage186. Digitization has several benefits, including preservation, access, education, and research. The benefits are briefly described in the table, highlighting the importance of digital cultural heritage for upcoming generations.
The difficulties in protecting digital cultural assets are listed in Table 3. Digitization presents several challenges, such as preservation, intellectual property and copyright, and cost and resources187. The table provides a brief description of each challenge, highlighting the importance of addressing these challenges in the protection of digital cultural heritage.
Table 4 lists examples of digitization initiatives. Projects and initiatives known as digitization initiatives are designed to digitally preserve cultural heritage items and make them more widely available. Initiatives from various regions of the world are listed in the table, including Europeana.
The number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites is broken out each region in Table 5. The distribution of cultural heritage assets across the world is illustrated in the table by the number of World Heritage assets in each region188.
Examples of tangible cultural heritage are provided in Table 6. Physical items with cultural significance, such as monuments, artifacts, and landscapes, are referred to as tangible cultural heritage. The Grand Canyon, the Mona Lisa, and other examples of tangible cultural legacy from around the world are listed in the table.
