FRU INÉS

Translated by Katherine Hanson and Judith Messick

978-1-909408-05-0       170 PAGES        PAPERBACK

£11.95

Fru Inés, wife of the Swedish consul in late nineteenth-century Constantinople,

is a member of the wealthy elite; but her privileged position has become a

prison, and her attempt to break out by taking a young lover does not bring

the sexual fulfilment she craves.

This novel tells the story of the misalliance

between Lucie, a vivacious and beautiful dancing

girl from Tivoli, and Theodor Gerner, a respectable

lawyer from the strait-laced middle-class society

of nineteenth-century Norway. Having first kept

her as a mistress, Gerner is so captivated by Lucie’s

charms that he marries her, only to discover

that his project to turn her into a proper and

demure housewife is continually frustrated by her

irrepressible sensuality and lack of fine breeding.

What had made her alluring as a mistress makes

her unacceptable as a wife. His attempts to govern

her behaviour develop gradually into a harsh

tyranny against which she rebels in a manner

which brings misery and despair to both.

Portrait of the Painter Oda Krohg, b. Lasson, 1888 by

Christian Krohg, Oil on Linen, 69 x 86 cm, The National

Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Norway.

The cover picture of the bohemian Oda Krohg, wife of

the painter Christian Krohg and a member of Amalie

Skram’s circle of friends, was painted in the same year

that Lucie was published. Although the portrait does

not represent the novel’s heroine, the jaunty pose is

strikingly reminiscent of Lucie as we first meet her.
