How can I assess CoETL?

Assessing CoETL (Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning) is easier than ever with our teacher-made resources, all you have to do is download and print.
You can incorporate CoETL into your lessons with resources like our Mr Men and Little Miss CoETL Display Pack and encourage your children to celebrate their achievements! Each character represents a specific type of learning and you, your pupils and their parents can easily see when their development matches the skill of that character.
You can also use our fantastic CoETL Learning Record Sheet to keep a record of any observations you make about your children and track their development with regard to the characteristics of effective teaching and learning. This Tracking Sheet is also a helpful tool.
It’s great for creating an overview of your children's development!

How can I make CoETL fun for children?

EYFS characteristics of effective learning examples and rules can be difficult for children to understand, which can make assessments more challenging than they need to be, so the best way to engage them is to translate the concept into child-friendly activities.
Our Superhero Themed CoETL Sticker Reward Chart assigns each characteristic to a superhero, and each one is written in simple language that’s easy for EYFS children to understand.
Simply print the resource onto a sticker sheet, and now your children can see their achievements and feel accomplished. The stickers also help you to easily track their progress and assess it at a glance.
Another fantastic way to make CoETL more fun is to use display posters, such as our Animal-Themed CoETL Display Posters.
Decorated settings are generally more engaging for children and can help young children to remember key facts! Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning, also known as CoETL, are an important part of the EYFS curriculum. Teachers are expected to reflect on the different ways in which children are able to learn by planning lessons and activities through the CoETL and assessing individual children's success. The three characteristics of CoETL that teachers assess for are playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. We’ve compiled a range of resources to make your CoETL assessments much easier. From child-friendly activities that you can use in the classroom to documents that can help you write reports, there’s plenty to make your CoETL teaching more effective and efficient!
