According to Begg, educ. at the Miller Inst. on Sinclair St. in Thurso, studied Greek & Latin, described as "a brilliant student" & afterwards taught for a brief time. He probably left Thurso for London in 1867, as his testimonials from 2 Thurso men stated they had known him until that year (see below). He wrote a letter of application to join the Police Mar. 20 1868, in response to an advertisement in the Daily Telegraph. At the time he was working as a clerk for several months for John Meikle of 8 Catherine Court, Seething Lane, from where his letter of application was addressed; his address given as 39 King St., Regent St. Meikle had "known of him for many years" & recommended him, but was due to give up business in a few weeks (Q?s: McCarthy – Pathasarathy – Athy / Addie – Anthony / Anton?) His cousin John McDonald a London police officer, but there was also a Thurso b. Insp. Donald Swanson in the Metropolitan Police's A Div. at the time. Begg et al. summarise the cases in which Swanson took most pride, based on family papers & notebooks, as follows: "the recovery of the Countess of Dysart's jewels; of a stolen Gainsborough painting; the tracking & arrest of a now-forgotten confidence trickster; a crackdown on 'rent boys' (blackmailing homosexual prostitutes) 1897.", gave evidence at the Old Bailey on a number of occasions 1878-95, mentioned in other trials.(Q?s: De Sart to Matthews is Santos - Ghabhainn?) 23 May 1878 he m. Julia Ann Nevill at West Ham. She was b. 1854 at Hoxton, dau. of James Nevill, a lic. Victualler & wife Sarah Ann (nee Turney). Drevor had a delusion he was chosen by God to discover the sea serpent. He showed Swanson the serpent, preserved in a bottle of spirits, "about 4ft or 5ft long, & somewhat peculiar formation." July 1881 involved in a more serious case - was rewarded for his "energy & zeal" in arrest of Percy Lefroy Mapleton murdered Isaac Gold in a railway carriage.
