INTRODUCTION
Every teacher wants to give his pupils the best knowledge, which they will use every time, anywhere where it is necessary. But how to achieve this aim? Of course he must be qualified teacher, he must teach them letters, new words, phonetic, grammar, and etc., but also he must rightly evaluate pupils’ knowledge and makes them do it without any fear and with ease. Because pupils should improve their skills and knowledge in foreign language.
Teaching English is a complex process aimed at developing language competence in students. This process involves mastering four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The desire to achieve linguistic literacy in English confronts students with the task of not only mastering grammatical and lexical structures, but also developing skills in the correct use of language in various contexts.
Written tests occupy an important place in language teaching, providing an effective tool for assessing and developing students’ writing skills. Their role lies in several key aspects:
1. Assessment of Grammatical and Lexical Correctness: Written tests allow you to assess the level of proficiency in grammatical structures and the richness of vocabulary in students.
2. Developing Idea Structuring Skills: Essay or essay writing tasks require students to clearly structure thoughts, which helps develop organizational skills.
3. Support of Critical Thinking: Analyzing texts, writing reviews or argumentative essays contributes to the development of critical thinking and the ability to argue one’s point of view.
4. Self-Esteem and Motivation: The results of written tests can serve as feedback, promoting self-esteem and motivating students to further improve their writing skills.
The effectiveness of written tests in English language teaching is determined by their ability to measure and improve students’ writing skills in accordance with learning objectives. This includes several key aspects:
1. Assessment of Knowledge and Skills: Written tests allow you to assess the degree of mastery of grammatical structures, vocabulary and writing skills by students. Assessment provides learners and teachers with a clear picture of their language proficiency.
2. Promoting Literacy: Essay writing or text analysis tasks require students not only to use language correctly, but also to develop the ability to structure and express their thoughts in writing.
3. Motivation for Independent Study: Written tests can be a tool to motivate students to do additional reading and independent practice, as they see a direct connection between the knowledge they acquire and successful completion of the test.
4. Identification of Individual Needs: Analysis of test results allows us to identify the individual weaknesses and strengths of each student, which can later be used for personalized learning.
5. Real Link to Language Competence: If tests are focused on real-life scenarios of language use (for example, writing letters, reviews or essays), their effectiveness increases because they are closer to real life situations.
Thus, the effectiveness of written tests in English language teaching depends on their ability to measure, motivate and develop students’ writing skills while supporting the goals and objectives of language learning.
