Age: Elementary to Adult ESL classes
Purpose: Practice pronouncing vowels and consonants
Skill area: Oral intelligibility/ segmental/ vowels & consonants
Type: Individual Activity
This activity helps students to discover their pronunciation mistakes in vowels and consonants. Minimal pairs, for instance, cheek vs. chick, are used in this activity. Each student works with their own English-speaking tutor.
Activity procedures:
1. Each student and his tutor will get the same list of words. Each word appears with another word that has one different sound, for instance, heel vs. hill.
2. The student will read through the list of words from the very beginning to the end.
3. The tutor should mark what she actually heard on her list.
4. Afterwards, the tutor will give the student the list that has her marks.
5. The student should keep practicing those words that he pronounced wrongly.
6. Each time the student will get a different list of words. He should keep record of which sounds that he has trouble with for future practice.
7. A rather extensive list of minimal pairs is included for this activity.


III. CONCLUSION
As the result of the process of preparing this course paper I obtained some useful and supplementary acquisitions.
First of all, practical approaches related to making scientific writing projects formed on our mind and this kind of activities led us to develop our state of being familiar with such scientific projects. Moreover, the course paper I am about to finish made me explore and investigate on the given topic. When it comes to the topic I was given, classification of vowels according to vertical and horizontal movement of tongue that satisfied my demand on the project while I am working on it.
On the other hand, the other most important process of the course paper is working in a practical part. Because it is the first time for me to attempt to make different activities for students on a given topic and analyze it in a methodological statement. Because of that it was challenging for me.
At the beginning of my research, I divide my course work into two chapters. In the first chapter, I gave information about classification of vowels according to vertical and horizontal movement of tongue, its classification, well-known scientists and their contributions to this subject, differences and similarities of it with other classification. I can say that the process of researching on one common theme of phonetics increase one’s knowledge about scientific research acquisition
Chapter II includes the practical part including exercises and phonetic analysis of the words. I can say that it is one of the main procedures of my course paper and it made me research on the phonetic and phonological analysis deeply. Since firstly I make set of exercises, including fill in the blanks, multiple choice, true false, logical connection, derivational exercises, on theoretical theme. Then I analyze them in methodological statements. Although I am not excellent at analyzing such kind of activities, I tried to be as better as possible with the support of my teachers, supervisor, and also my course mates.
All in all, preparing this course paper became one of the worthy procedures of my studying at the university and taught me several practices and theoretical approaches.
