        -  in birds, uric acid is the major product of the catabolism of nitrogen, as opposed to urea in 

mammals; production of uric acid permits excretion or storage of nitrogen waste in a small 

volume of water, as uric acid is relatively non-toxic as compared to urea or ammonia -

essential for embryo development within the egg; 

        -  visceral gout generally results from renal failure or dehydration; it is characterized by the 

deposition of white chalky material (urate) of variable thickness in the kidneys and on serosal 

surfaces (mainly epicardium, liver, air sacs); 

        -  articular gout, which is characterized by deposition of white semifluid material (urate) within 

joints, more likely results from excessive production of uric acid associated with high-protein 

diets.
