Uremic stomatitis / glossitis
- due to chemical injury of the oral mucosa when high urea in the blood permeates into the
saliva;
- oral bacteria transform urea into ammonia (NH
3
) → irritates oral epithelium → ulceration of
the
mucosa with adhered brown, foul-smelling mucoid material (halitosis / urine breath).
