ALUMNI NEWS Yalçın Diril RA 65 P r o u d father Yalçın Diril was very happy to s h a r e news of his y o u n g e r son Emir's s u c c e s s with the rest of the RC community. Emir finished high s c h o o l at St. J o s e p h , istanbul and c o n t i n u e d on to Yıldız Technical University, D e p a r t m e n t of Ship Building. However, it turned out that was not what he really wanted to do. In his fourth year there he informed his parents that he wanted to study music and specifically at the Berklee College of Music in B o s t o n . His firm belief in his ability to s u c c e e d c o n v i n c e d his parents too. Emir has c o m p l e t e d his first year and made the Dean's List for spring s e m e s t e r 2 0 0 6 with a grade point average of 3.98. Yalçın Diril says Emir has c h o s e n the field of Film S c o r i n g as he continues his studies at Berklee. As the R C Q went to press, we learned that Fügen Gülertekin, A C G 71, is to return to Turkey in October, having s e r v e d an eight year prison s e n t e n c e in a case that was protested by many in Turkey. As most of you know, she was s e n t e n c e d to eight years without parole for allegedly h a r m i n g a child in her home day care center. The prosecution claimed the baby - who is now 10, alive and well - suffered from "shaken baby s y n d r o m e , " and that Gülertekin was responsible. We hope to have more information on Gülertekin in the next issue of the RC Quarterly.
After working for the Industrial Development Bank of Turkey and IBM Turkey as financial analyst, Engin worked for S T F A C o n s t r u c t i o n Co. as Financial Manager. He migrated to Australia in 1981, where he worked as a Budget A c c o u n t a n t for Olivetti for 5 years before starting his own public a c c o u n t a n c y office. He sold the business in 2 0 0 2 and s e m i - retired. He works as a casual interpreter and translator when not traveling. Engin wrote, "I have performed as a folk d a n c e r until 50 years old. I was hooked at RC Folklor Kulübü. After graduation I b e c a m e a d a n c i n g m e m b e r of D'ansemle R ( P e r f o r m a n c e Group of Dutch Folk Dancing Association) in Rotterdam for t w o years in the late sixties. I joined The A c a d e m y of Turkish M u s i c and Fine A r t s in S y d n e y both as a p e r f o r m i n g and executive c o m m i t t e e m e m b e r before serving one year as President. I have been married to S u n a y (Bayel) since 1972. She is a graduate of S c h o o l of Literature at University of Istanbul. We have two daughters, Z e y n e p (32) and A y s e (27) and a grand-daughter Koko Rose from Z e y n e p . Z e y n e p has worked on several film projects as assistant producer, including t w o of the last t w o Star Wars films, The Quiet A m e r i c a n , Rabbit Proof Fence, Racing Stripes, Babe etc. Ayse is a remedial m a s s a g e therapist. A p a r t from running our a c c o u n t i n g office, we worked in a m a t e u r theatre and music groups. Since we enjoyed theatre v e r y m u c h , we were involved in o r g a n i z i n g tours of prominent theatre c o m p a n i e s from Turkey o v e r the years, including G e n c o Erkal, Ferhan Şensoy, Ali Poyrazoğlu, Levent Kırca, and Istanbul Sehir Tiyatroları. However, our most serious hobby is traveling. Presently, we travel for 4 - 5 m o n t h s every year c a m p i n g in Australia a n d / o r backpacking o v e r s e a s . We are looking forward to hearing f r o m our s c h o o l friends. If you are planning to travel to Australia please get in touch with us. We would love to c o m e together a g a i n . Went to Wellesley College after A C G and majored in Sociology, with a minor in political s c i e n c e . She continued at La S o r b o n n e in France and L'institut Française de Presse. She has been working as a journalist since 1982. In her own words: "I focused on Latin A m e r i c a for many years. Since 1992 I am in charge of Turkey and C a u c a s i a for Le Monde's weekly publication of C o u r r i e r International. I have also written for Le Monde Diplomatique, the Turkish daily C u m h u r i y e t , and publications s u c h as Birgun and Idea Politika. From time to time I prepare d o c u m e n t a r i e s for the marine program Thalassa on French television's C h a n n e l 3." Nur Dölay has two books published in Turkey; Latin A m e r i k a Başkaldırıyor (Latin A m e r i c a Rebels) from Süreç Yayınevi, 1985, and Kafkasya Çemberi (Caucasian Circle), from Çiviyazıları in 2001.
After completing her undergraduate degree in E c o n o m i c s at Boğaziçi University (1990), Z e y n e p Kızıltan attended the International Relations Graduate Diploma P r o g r a m at the S c h o o l of A d v a n c e d International S t u d i e s / B o l o g n a C e n t e r of the J o h n Hopkins University (1990-1991), after which she joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a career diplomat in 1992. She has been appointed to the P e r m a n e n t Mission of Turkey at the Office of the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland), Turkish E m b a s s y in A l m a t y (Kazakhstan), C o n s u l a t e General of Turkey in A n t w e r p (Belgium) and P e r m a n e n t Delegation of Turkey to the E u r o p e a n Union (Belgium) respectively. She is currently working in the United Nations D e p a r t m e n t of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in A n k a r a , and has been married to ihsan Kızıltan, also a career diplomat, since 1997. They have two children; Alp, who is now six years old, and Defne, 15 m o n t h s old.
Wrote to the R C Q from A l e x a n d r i a , VA where he lives with his wife of six years and a s o n , who is a year and a half old. Basat is a Principal Analyst at Project P e r f o r m a n c e C o r p o r a t i o n (www.ppc.com) P P C is a c o n s u l t a n c y firm specializing in environmental issues, health issues, information technology, and archive m a n a g e m e n t . Its principal c u s t o m e r is the A m e r i c a n Civil A g e n c i e s and G o v e r n m e n t but it also has a strong standing in the private s e c t o r and with charitable institutions. Bülent Omay RC 93 A s u r g e o n , Dr. O m a y is currently in Melbourne, Australia at this time of his life. After RC he c o m p l e t e d the Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa. He later specialized in brain surgery at the s a m e University. O m a y then worked for one year at Yale University S c h o o l of Medicine's brain s u r g e r y d e p a r t m e n t . At present he can be found in M e l b o u r n e , working in a center well known in the field of brain t u m o r s . Dicle Türkoğlu RC 9S Dicle and Keith P e t e r s o n w e l c o m e d a new baby into their family. Nar Rosa Peterson was born on 6 / 6 / 0 6 , and is a sweet natured little girl with big smiling eyes. P r o u d big sister Ela is almost four years old. She likes to refer to Nar as "my baby", and enjoys being m o m m y ' s little helper. Ela also loves princess stories, farm animals and picture books. When she is not taking care of babies, Dicle works on her dissertation in Clinical P s y c h o l o g y at the University of V e r m o n t . She also likes gardening, and visiting orchards around V e r m o n t .
