sentiments as unrequited, and unrequitable, love for noble women beyond their
social reach, perhaps illuminating the curious position of the formally unfree and
dependent, yet socially elevated class of 
ministeriales
 . It was possible to have a
career as a professional poet at court, superior in status but about as insecure as
that  of  court  jester  or  musician.  As  important  as  the  lyric  poetry  of  the  high
middle  ages  was  narrative  poetry:  the  first  German  version  of  the  Tristan  and
Isolde  legend  dates  from  about  1170,  while  works  of  enduring  value  were
produced  by  Gottfried  von  Strassburg  (author  of  the  most  important 
Tristan
  ),
Hartmann von Aue and Wolfram von Eschenbach (best known for his 
Parzival
 ).
There  was  also  the  heroic  epic,  the  most  famous  of  which  was  the
Nibelungenlied
 . Many of these works were, of course, to provide material and
inspiration for the music-dramas of Richard Wagner in the nineteenth century.
