Ço¤u filminde oldu¤u gibi Mike Leigh, Vera
Drake’te de ev halinde süregelen birtak›m
törensel al›flkanl›klar›, aile yaflam›n›n örseleyici
gerçekli¤ini artan duygusal gerilim ö¤eleri

Vera
Drake. The “golden hearted” Vera, like all housewives,
takes off her woolen coat and puts on her flowery
apron, but as a side job, she secretly performs abortions
on “women in trouble”, for free. It is 1950, and the
British Abortion Act is yet another 17 years away. In
post-war Britain, the health system is a disgrace. As
opposed to Leigh’s previous films, the distress that
disrupts the happy family does not come from the
family itself, but rather from the outside, from the
police and the society. Vera, from Leigh’s perspective, is
the wrong woman, a victim of the indiscriminatingly
accusing judicial system. Winner of the Golden Lion at
the Venice Film Festival, Vera Drake is a masterpiece
replete with sharp observations and rich dialogs, that
adjoins social history with a feminist witch-hunt.

20 fiubat 1943’te, ‹ngiltere’de, Lancashire’de do¤du. Leatherhead
Repertuar Tiyatrosu’nda sahne yönetmeni asistanl›¤› yapt›ktan sonra
Camberwell Sanat Akademisi ile Londra Sinema Okulu’nda resim ve
tasar›m üzerine ö¤renimine devam etti. 1971’de yönetti¤i ilk uzun
metrajl› filmi ‹ç Karart›c› Anlar ile fiikago ve Locarno gibi festivallerde
ödüller kazand›. Özellikle 90’l› y›llarda sinema için yaz›p çekti¤i
filmler onun önemli bir yönetmen olarak uluslararas› bir flöhrete
kavuflmas›n› sa¤lam›flt›r.
Born in Lancashire, England on 20 February 1943. He was an
assistant stage manager at the Leatherhead Repertory Theatre and
then went on to study at the Camberwell College
of Art, and the London Film School of Art and
Design. He made his feature film debut in 1971
with Bleak Moments, which won awards at
Chicago and Locarno. In the 90s, he has written
and directed a series of distinctive features for
cinema that gained him an international
reputation as a leading filmmaker.

Michelangelo Antonioni, 1995 y›l›nda k›smi felç
geçirdikten sonra, efli Enrica, yönetmenin son filmi
Bulutlar›n Ötesinde’nin yap›mc›s› Tchal Gadjieff’e, eflinin
hep erotik bir film, yani di¤er eserlerinde oldu¤u gibi
erotik bir yönü olan de¤il, gerçekten erotik bir film
yapmak istedi¤ini söyledi. Gadjieff, bunun üzerine, daha
önce Antonioni’den etkilendiklerini ifade eden iki büyük
genç yönetmenin birer bölümle ustaya efllik edecekleri,
“eros” konulu bir üçleme fikri gelifltirdi. Antonioni’nin
bölümü The Dangerous Thread of Things’in senaryosu,
Tonino Guerro taraf›ndan, yönetmenin “That Bowling
Alley on the Tiber” adl› kitab›n›n üç k›sa vinyetinden
esinlenilerek yaz›ld› ve çekimlere 2001 y›l›nda ‹talya’n›n
Toskana bölgesinde baflland›. Soderbergh’in bölümü
Equilibrium, Mart 2003’te Los Angeles’ta bir stüdyoda
çekildi. Wong Kar-Wai’nin filmi The Hand, Antonioni’nin
filmlerinde s›kça rastlanan bu motife bir göndermeye
atfen adland›r›ld›. Bu bölümün çekimlerine, görüntü

After M›chelangelo Anton›on› suffered a stroke
›n 1995,
his wife Enrica told the producer of his then
latest film Beyond the Clouds, Tchal Gadjieff that he had
always wanted to do an erotic film; not a film with an
erotic dimension as all his previous work, but rather a
really erotic film. This is when Gadjieff came up with
the idea of doing a trilogy with “eros” as the subject,
where two major younger directors who had admitted
that they were influenced by Antonioni would
accompany him with a segment each on the erotic
subject of their choice. Antonioni’s segment The
Dangerous Thread of Things with a the script written by
long-time screenwriter Tonino Guerra based on three
brief vignettes from Antonioni’s book “That Bowling
Alley on the Tiber” was shot first, in 2001 in Tuscany,
Italy. Soderbergh’s segment Equilibrium started
shooting in March 2003 in a Los Angeles studio. Wong
Kar-Wai’s film The Hand, titled as an homage to the
very motif that recurs in the Italian master’s work, was
shot later in 2003 in Hong Kong with Christopher
Doyle as the director of photography. Antonioni’s and
Soderbergh’s segments are connected by a song called
“Michelangelo Antonioni” sung in Italian by the
Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso, while all three
segments are linked by sequences designed by the
Italian artist Lorenzo Mattotti.
