Transport Systems and models (Prof. Pronello) The framework Transport vs Mobility MobilitysummaryIntelligent Transport Systems
Definition
The term has origins to the 80s with programs that used sensing, information and
communication, and signal processing to achieve better transport systems. The
definition of ITS depends on the country and situation.

Action plan for the deployment of ITS in Europe (2008): for the developments of
ITS in road transport including interfaces with other transport modes.
Definition of ITS: “ITS means applying ICT to transport. These application are
developed for different transport mode and for the interchange between them”

ITS Directive of the European Council 2010/40/EU (2010)
Definition of ITS: Systems in which information and communication technologies
are applied in the field of road transport, including infrastructure, vehicles and
users, traffic management, mobility management, as well as with other modes of
transport.
Priority areas:
1-
Optimum use of road
2-
Continuity in freight management ITS services
3-
ITS road safety and security applications
4-
Linking the vehicle with the transport infrastructure
ITS Architecture
Is a set of high level viewpoints that enable plans to be made for integrating ITS
applications and services. It involves technical but also business and regulatory
aspects.
Formally it is the conceptual design that defines the structure and behavior of an ITS.
It will provide the instruments to plan new interventions on the transport system. It
is technological independent and imposes the minimum assumption possible.
