PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE continued
dinner and they all arrived with a wee dram or two, which made for a very convivial evening.
Our Vice-President Carol Davis and husband Reg joined Ruairidh and Jillian in Sydney to meet with
Sydney clansfolk. A very enjoyable evening with gracious hosts and excellent music was had and our
thanks to Bruce, our webmaster for bringing the evening together.
After a couple of weeks in New Zealand, Ruairidh and Jillian returned to
Melbourne where a final farewell was held by your Clan Committee in the
form of a buffet dinner at Secretary Patsy’s home in Strathmore. Apart from
expressing his appreciation for the chance to meet so many clan members,
Chief Ruairidh made it clear he hoped to see as many Australian members of
Clan MacLennan who could manage to get to Scotland for the great Gathering
of the Clans in June and July this year. To the best of my knowledge there are
approximately 24 planning to be in Scotland for the re-enactment of the Battle
of Bannockburn on the weekend of 28-29th June followed by the Clan
MacLennan Gathering the next weekend 3-6th July, which is being organised
by Ruairidh and the Scottish Committee. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet MacLennan
clansfolk from around the world.
Some of you may have heard a rumour that I have been laid up with a broken leg. Not true, the leg was not
broken just almost! Six weeks ago today I put my foot through a hole in the woolshed floor where my son
Ashley had said “You’d better fix that hole in the floor before you tread on it and break your leg”.
I plan to be fit and well ready to march in the Ringwood Games on Sunday 30
th
March. Let’s make this
the year that Clan MacLennan has the biggest team in the march past.
Please remember the games will be held in a different location. This year they will be held at the
Sportsground, Cnr. Mt. Dandenong & Dublin Roads, East Ringwood (Mel. 50 B7).
Our AGM will be held a little earlier this year on Sunday 8
th
June. Again, we have a different location
following Bruce and Pat’s move to a new home. Our AGM will be held at the Malvern Bowls Club, 14
Coonil Cres, Malvern (Thanks to Reg Davis for organising this new venue for us).
The winner of the Clan MacLennan Perpetual Piping Trophy 2013 was Jeremiah Doecke, of
Milong,
Sth Australia who has been invited to pipe for us at the AGM. Congratulations Jeremiah.
The “Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan” Service organised by the Scots of Victoria Coordinating Group will be held
at The Scots’ Church, corner of Collins and Russell Streets, Melbourne on Sunday 6th July, 2014, at
11am. After the Service all the Clansfolk will meet
upstairs in the Church Hall in Collins Street for a
“bring-your-own” lunch; tea and coffee will be provided. I encourage as many of you as possible to attend
the service, as a number of Clan members who regularly attend will be in Scotland this year and therefore
be unable to participate. It would be nice to have some MacLennan tartan represented.
I look forward to seeing you at the new venue for the Ringwood Highland Games on 30th March.
Sincerely Yours,
Graeme MacLennan,
President

NEWS FROM OUR CHIEF

Dear Clansfolk
The past year has been fairly busy and the year ahead looks set to be as busy again. With trips to Canada,
Australia, New Zealand and Singapore during 2013, it is only recently that I have managed to surface for
breath and some well -earned rest. However, with Bannockburn Live in Stirling at the end of June and our
own gathering in Inverness early July and our wedding in early September, the quieter winter months will
soon be a distant memory.
At the end of October, Jillian gave up her job with Scottish Woodlands
and I took two months leave from my work so that we could extend our
visit to Australia, where we visited Clan members in Melbourne and
Sydney. It was a lovely time to get away from Scotland as a rather wet and
windy winter took its’ grip of the country. The trip was a wonderful
adventure and we are much obliged to the various clansfolk who helped
make our visit to Australia so enjoyable. We were hosted by Carol and
Reg Davis after our arrival in Melbourne and had an informal picnic with
members of the Melbourne Committee a few days later. I then joined
Graeme and Frankie MacLennan at their farm property for a few days of
relaxation, sailing and hiking whilst Jillian went to Tasmania. The Clan
Luncheon in Melbourne was a great success which was very well attended and ran efficiently and
smoothly. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. Max McLennan (Melbourne) who had
done so much to organise every fine detail of the event would have been proud of the work that was
undertaken by the Committee who continued his work and ran an event that he would have been
thoroughly proud of.
After a few days sightseeing in Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, we flew to
Sydney where we were hosted by Bruce & Prue McLennan. We had an enjoyable few
days sightseeing in Sydney and trekking in the Blue Mountains. Bruce organised an
informal Clan MacLennan Ceilidh in Sydney which was also well attended and very
much enjoyed by all those who attended and participated. It was a lovely opportunity
both in Melbourne and Sydney to see so many old friends from the Clan as it had been
ten years since I was in Melbourne and over sixteen years since I had been in Sydney. I
would like to express my thanks to all those people who attended either of these events
and to those who worked to make them happen. Jillian and I were made to feel very
welcome and immensely enjoyed our time with you all.
Following our two weeks with the Clan, Jillian and I went “off duty” and embarked on some travelling on
the tourist trail. We flew up to Cairns and hired a car and stayed in Port Douglas and
Cape Tribulation for a
week whilst exploring the surrounding area. The highlight was some scuba diving off the Great Barrier
Reef. We then flew to Auckland in New Zealand where we collected our rather comfortable camper van
which we had for 23 days of exploring New Zealand. The van was very well kitted out with a good
kitchen, fridge, gas heaters, w/c and shower, television, music system, on board power supply, comfortable
double bed and two mountain bikes attached to the back. It was fairly economical to run and not too
cumbersome to drive. From Auckland we headed north to the Bay of Islands where we did some exploring
and took a day trip out to the Islands. We met up with and had dinner on board a yacht with an old School
friend of mine from Ullapool who, along with her boyfriend, had made landfall in New Zealand having set
off from the Caribbean. It was interesting hearing about all their adventures on the ocean for so long.
From the north, we then travelled south taking in various destinations including Waitomo Caves, Rotarua,
Lake Taupo and a day trip to White Island which is a live volcanic island. After heading to Wellington, we
crossed the Straits to the South Island and went to Nelson where we spent some time visiting a former
colleague of mine who had worked as an estate factor in Aberdeenshire when I was with Strutt & Parker.
He and his wife emigrated to New Zealand three years ago and now have two children. From here, we
travelled down the west coast of the South Island visiting glaciers amongst other things and eventually
made it to Queenstown where we spent a week undertaking a variety of exciting activities including white
water rafting, mountain biking, kayaking on Milford Sound (on a very wet day) and surviving the Shotover
Canyon boat ride! Continued …...
