end-stage kidney
is a term used to describe kidneys that are so severely affected by chronic
inflammation and fibrosis that it is not possible to determine the type of primary insult; in the
terminal stages of uremia associated with end-stage kidney, renal function, as determined by the
glomerular filtration rate, may be less than 5% of normal.
GRANULOMATOUS NEPHRITIS
(not for the exam)
∙
usually occurs in diseases in which granulomas are disseminated in a variety of organs, e.g. feline
infectious peritonitis (FIP), tuberculosis, systemic mycosis, encephalitozoonosis, etc.
∙
the lesions can be grossly visible or microscopic (special stains may help to identify the etiologic
agent).
∙
occasionally, lesions can be difficult to distinguish from some tumoral lesions such as
lymphosarcoma (especially with FIP).
