As from
January 2008
, Austrian health insurance and eID cards (eCards) begin to use
qualified electronic signatures
. The new signature function – which could be
activated free of charge - besides its present role as an ID for administrative and social
security purposes, it could be used more easily for signing and encoding of information,
e.g. in electronic banking. The qualified certificate to be included on the card conformed
to Europe-wide standards.
2007
In
September 2007
, the study 'The User Challenge - Benchmarking the Supply of Online
Public Services', is prepared for the European Commission, Directorate General for
Information Society and Media. The study, which measures the progress of on-line
public service delivery across Europe, states that “Austria remains at the top of the
EU27+ league table with very impressive ratings at or near 100 %”.
