APPLE Apple has a long and complicated history. It started out as an underdog, but its popularity has grown to the point where it’s hard to imagine how it could have been anything else. The company is now one of the most valuable in history, with a market value that exceeds $1 trillion. But what makes Apple so special? Why do people love their products so much? And how did this iconic tech company get started in the first place? In this article, we’ll explore each part of Apple’s story and bring you up to speed on everything from its founders’ backgrounds to its most popular products.
MICROSOFT Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational technology corporation headquartered in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft's best-known software products are the Windows line of operating systems, the Microsoft 365 suite of productivity applications, and the Edge web browser. Its flagship hardware products are the Xbox video game consoles and the Microsoft Surface lineup of touchscreen personal computers. Microsoft ranked No. 14 in the 2022 Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue;[2] it was the world's largest software maker by revenue as of 2022. It is considered one of the Big Five American information technology companies, alongside Alphabet (parent company of Google), AmazonApple, and Meta.
COMMONALITIES Apple and Microsoft have been arch-rivals for a long time, and much has been made about their differences. Differences aside, the two companies actually share a lot in common. You’d be hard-pressed to think of two other companies more responsible for the omnipresence of computing and software tools. Fittingly, both companies seem to have a permanent perch on the Fortune 500 list; for 2012, Apple is ranked No. 17, and Microsoft is No. 37. Perhaps more important to computer users is that both companies offer application software products. In particular, Apple has its iWork integrated productivity suite, whereas Microsoft has its Office suite of applications.
