Platyrinchus Desmarest 1805]

Rynchites: Herbst 1797-124 [misprinted 134] [error]

Platyrynchus Thunberg (1815) (usually misspelled Platyrhynchus) has been considered incorrectly to be a junior synonym of Deporaus Samouelle (1819) because of presumed homonymy with Platyrinchus Desmarest (1805). Two species were included when the genus was established: Attelabus betulae Linnaeus (1758) [now in Deporaus] and Platyrynchus nebulosus Thunberg (1815) [now in Rhynchites].16Mem. Amer. Ent. Inst., no. 34, 1982
Rhynchites (continued)

We here designate Platyrynchus nebulosus Thunberg as type-species. Thus, Platyrynchus becomes a junior synonym of Rhynchites Schneider [New Synonymy].

Family NEMONYCHIDAE

Tribe NEOCIMBERINI [New Namel (formerly Cimberini and Rhinomacerini)

Neocimberis O'Brien & Wibmer [New Name]

Cimberis: of authors [not des Gozis 1881 (Pythidae !)]

Rhinomacer: of authors [not Fabricius 1781 (Pythidae !)]

Fabricius (1781) established Rhinomacer with curculioides as its only species (subsequently spelled curculionoides by most authors). This beetle is a Pythidae, see Hatch (1971). In 1787, Fabricius included the species curculioides and attelaboides in Rhinomacer, and most authors incorrectly considered this to be the date of publication of this name. Schoenherr (1823) designated attelaboides Fabricius as the type-species of Rhinomacer, but this is not valid since this name was not included in 1781. In 1881, des Gozis replaced Rhinomacer Fabricius with Cimberis because of homonymy with Rhinomacer Geoffroy (1762). However, the 1762 publication of Geoffroy has been rejected by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (1954 - Opinion 228). Cimberis is an objective synonym of Rhinomacer Fabricius and therefore also a Pythidae. Thus, we propose the new name Neocimberis (type-species Rhinomacer attelaboides Fabricius 1787-123, by present designation) for this genus of weevils.

Nanodes Schoenherr (1826) was replaced with Nanophyes by Schoenherr (1838) because of homonymy with Nanodes Stephens (1826). However, Nanodes Schoenherr (1825) (type-species Curculio lythri Fabricius 1787-102, by original designation) is not a nomen nudum and by priority is the valid name of the genus.
