Moves: How Women Can Pivot, Reboot,
and Build a Career of Purpose
.
The Fix:
CONSIDER A CHANGE
When you’re facing adversity in the
workplace, it can be tempting to
simply throw in the towel and say
“I quit.” But before you put in your
two weeks, keep in mind that every
job ebbs and flows, so it’s crucial to
distinguish between a challenging
learning experience and a toxic
situation, says Jeannie Kim, the
editorial director of job-search site
the Muse. “Have you tried speaking
with your manager about a conflict
with a colleague?” she says. “Have you
tried approaching your colleague in
different ways to try to resolve that
conflict? Have you spoken to human
resources? Do you see a possible way
to alleviate the situation that is in your
control?” You want to move forward
knowing that you did everything in
your power to remedy these issues.
If you’ve assessed the situation and
still want to walk away from your
current situation, be proactive and
set yourself up for success (whenever
that may be). “Reach out to your
contacts, former coworkers, bosses,
and friends in your industry. Remind
people that you exist and you’re open
to opportunities,” Kim says. “Plus,
talking to people in your field can
help you figure out if what you’re
experiencing in your job is normal.”
