Our University 
 
 
Every  year  thousands  of  young  men  and  women  enter 
universities, where students get their higher education in various 
subjects.  Besides day departments  there are extra-mural  depart-
ments

 for part-time students who work during the day.  
 
If the applicants want to have a good command of the subject 
in  which  they  will  take  examinations,  they  attend  preliminary 
courses.  
 
Our country re-
quires

  more  and 
more 
specialists 
with a higher edu-
cation.  In  Azer-
baijan 
the 
complete course at 
most  universities 
lasts four years

The  applicants 
go  in  for  entrance  examinations  in  July  and  August  before  the 
new academic year begins. Education is free of charge and most 
of the students receive stipends.  
 
The first two years of study are generally the most difficult. At 
the universities students have lectures and practical hours. They 
attend  lectures  on  different  subjects:  Mathematics,  History  of 
Azerbaijan, Physics, Chemistry, Geodesy, Foreign languages and 
etc.  They  have  hours  of  practical  training  in  the  well-equipped

laboratories of the university.
 
 
 
At every university there is a reading hall and a library, where 
the students can take the necessary text-books as well as

 books 
for reading.  
 
Sport is also compulsory during the first years of study. 
 
The academic year is divided into two terms: from September 
to January and from February to July.  
 
Students  take  examinations  at  the  end  of  each  term.  On 
completion of studies the student presents a graduation thesis

takes the finals

Among the students body

 of any institution of higher learning 
one can see quite a number of foreign students. After graduations 
they will return home full-fledged specialists.

• extra-mural  departments  –  qiyabi  şöbə  (bölmə).  Syn. 
correspondence  department:    To  study  by  correspondence  (as 
and external students) – qiyabi məşğul olur.  
 
• part-time students – istehsalatdan ayrılmamaq şərti ilə oxuyan 
qiyabi və axşam şöbəsinin tələbələri.  
 
• to have a good command of a subject – fənni yaxşı bilmək.  
  She has a good command of English.  
 
• to take (to have) an examinations in literature* - ədəbiyyatdan 
imtahan vermək. Syn. expr.: to go in for Literature, to pass an 
examination  (a  test)  in  English    -  ingilis  dilindən  (məqbul) 
imtahan vermək;  to  fall  an examination  (a test) in literature  - 
ədəbiyyat imtahanından (məqbuldan) kəsilmək.  
 
• to attend lectures on – mühazirələrdə iştirak etmək.
