Our last meeting at the Blennerhasset Hotel in downtown Parkersburg, WV, on November 12, 2009, was another
resounding success. Attendance exceeded 140 for a half day seminar presented by representatives of the West
Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Matt Vavro. After dinner, Vavro also presented a
comparison of Alternative Energy Sources to fossil fuels. Thanks to Matt Vavro, Richard Campbell and David
Belcher (from the WVDEP) for their time and service to our chapter.
I also want to express my appreciation to Darryl Griwatz, CPL, Honor Resources Company, and Aaron Hubbard,
Mason Dixon Energy, Inc., for heading up the Education Committee for the MLBC. Thanks Darryl and Aaron
for your efforts in developing an educational calendar with interesting and germane topics for today’s land
professionals.
As I am writing this, the weather forecast indicates at least a week long warming trend, with high temperatures in
the mid-40’s. Considering it’s the middle of January, that’s not too good for our industry, both for natural gas
prices and for the condition of thawing lease access roads and public highways. Where temperatures go for the
rest of the winter season is anybody’s guess. What I do know is it will probably be a Landman, with support
from Land Department personnel, who will take on the responsibility of insuring the drilling rig, service rig,
completion operation and reclamation crews have the necessary permits and approvals from property owners and
governmental officials to keep “the rig turnin’ to the right”.
Hope to see everyone at the next meeting on February 11, 2010, at the Bridgeport Conference Center in
Bridgeport WV.

The Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport WV will be the gathering place for our February 11, 2010
meeting. Past meetings at this facility have been excellent. Education Chairman, Darryl Griwatz has recruited
Peter Rottler of Schlumberger Oilfield Services to speak on Marcellus Shale fracture techniques. We have
requested RPL and CPL accreditation from AAPL for this topic.
The dinner/meeting fee is $50 per person. Late registration after 5 pm on February 8th will be $60 per person.
Registration for the dinner/meeting can be accomplished by contacting Sherry Gorman at EQT in Charleston at
304-348-3829
or you can e-mail her at
SGorman@eqt.com
by the end of business on February 8th. After that
date, late registrants will be accepted based on available capacity for a fee of $60 per person. The online
payment option (PayPal) available on the MLBC website at
www.mlbc-aapl.org
will be terminated at 5 pm on
February 10th for this event, so get your reservation in early. Checks and cash will be accepted at the door, but
we encourage our members and guests to use the PayPal option which facilitates a more efficient check in.

2009 was great year for the MLBC with a number of excellent educational events and the 50

Anniversary
Gala. 2010 will be even better as we begin a new decade. Hopefully, everyone came through the holiday
season looking forward to things to come.
Our March 2010 meeting will be at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston WV. A speaker is currently unscheduled,
but our Education Committee is working hard to come up with a topic and speaker to “WOW” us. The April
2010 meeting will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Canonsburg, PA. The event will be a full day seminar on
Lease Mechanics, 2D/3D Seismic and Ethics. Bill Zagorski, Vice President of Geology for Range Resources –
Appalachian, will round out the day speaking on the Marcellus Play, “Where are we and where are we going”
after dinner.

Rich Robb reports the chapter to be in good financial standing with a present balance of $23,093.38 as of
January 7, 2010.
If you were not aware, the Treasurer is responsible for registration at MLBC seminars and meetings, which
means recruiting a number of volunteers to assist in the process. If you are a meeting sponsor and would like to
provide a group to assist, or if you would just like to throw your hat in the ring and assist in this process, please
contact Rich Robb at 412-217-5897. Registration normally includes up to 4 people who can arrive early for the

seminars and meetings. Volunteering is a great way to participate in the activities of the MLBC and it is greatly
appreciated.

In the November/December 2009 AAPL Magazine, an article on title opinion reviewing was run titled “To
Waive, or Not to Waive? Analyzing Oil and Gas Title Opinion Requirements.” by Paul G. Yale of Burleson
Cook LLP. Of course, the article centered its precedents on Texas, but it’s a well written article and brings to
light many routinely occurring issues and requirements of most title attorneys. The article can be found on the
AAPL website at
www.landman.org/landmanarchive
. Search for the article by title or author.
On March 18, 2010, the Northern Appalachian Landmans Association will host a seminar in State College, PA.
This will be a half day seminar followed by their normal dinner and meeting. Check the MLBC website for a
copy of the brochure for this seminar and meeting.
The AAPL is contemplating a couple of seminars in the Appalachian region in 2010. The following subjects
are available:
1.
WI/NRI – 1 Day (6 CE credits)
2.
JOA – 1 Day (6 CE credits)
3.
Title Curative – Half Day (4 CE credits)
4.
Applied Field Land Practices – 1 day (6 CE credits)
5.
Fundamentals of Land Practices (with RPL exam if demand merits) – 1 day (7 CE credits, 1 ethics)
Please contact Darryl Griwatz or Aaron Hubbard if you would like to see certain classes hosted in this region.
