Introduction/Natural resources of Azerbaijan

  • The Azerbaijan is a country with very favorable natural conditions and rich natural resources.

  • Snowy peaks, high mountains, foothill fertile soils, wide plains, Lowest Land Points Below Ocean Level are the main landscape forms of republic.

The oil industry in Azerbaijan

  • The oil industry in Azerbaijan has made enormous progress in its history of 169 years.

  • The history of the oil industry of Azerbaijan dates back to the ancient period.

  • By the 19th century, Azerbaijan was by far the frontrunner in the world's oil and gas industry.

  • In 1846 - more than a decade before the Americans made their famous discovery of oil in Pennsylvania - Azerbaijan drilled its first oil well in Bibi-Heybat.

  • Azerbaijan has proven reserves equivalent to 199.8 times its annual consumption. This means that, without Net Exports, there would be about 200 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).



Cotton production in Azerbaijan

  • Cotton is named as "white gold" in Azerbaijan.

  • In the Caucasus regions, especially in Azerbaijan, cotton is spread by means of countries of the Ancient East, mainly by Iran. The exporting of textile made of cotton from the cities such as Barda, Nakhchivan, Beylagan, Ganja, Shamkir and others to abroad, as well as cotton fabrics exporting from Shamakhi to Russia in the 15th century can be highlighted.

Cotton exports from Azerbaijan to Russia have been expanded from XVII century.

  • In the 18th century, there were large cotton fields on the plains of Mil-Mughan and Shirvan

  • At the beginning of the 19th century the cotton industry was being developed in Guba and Baku.

After the Northern Azerbaijan was being joined to Russia, cotton production in Azerbaijan was developed especially since the end of the 19th century.

  • At the beginning of the 20th century, the cotton industry area was expanded in Azerbaijan due to Russian textile industry being down

  • In 1913 the cotton industry area was more than 100 thousand hectares, whereas the cotton production was 65 thousand tons

Tea growing in Azerbaijan

Tea growing in Azerbaijan is concentrated in an area of 5.33 thousand square kilometers located within the Lenkeran-Astara region, including the districts of Astara, Lankaran, Masalli, Lerik, Yardimli, and Jalilabad.



Around 90% of Azerbaijan's tea is produced in Lankaran close to the southern border with Iran

Tea industry

  • The tea-packing factory Sun Tea Azerbaijan, which has been in continuous operation since 1996, is the largest tea-packing factory in the CIS

  • The regional leader in South Caucasus, its annual production is around 15 thousand tons.

  • For its premier brand, Azerçay, the company uses leaves from locally situated tea plantations, or from India, Vietnam, or Kenya.

  • Its factory in Baku obtains high-quality Ceylon teas through its Inter Tea from Sri Lanka.

  • The factory mainly uses a mixture of Ceylon and Indian teas to make several types of tea, each with a different quality and composition.
