refugees? Explain.

Answer: His son asked him to help the Jewish refugees.

2. What was causing Mr. Sugihara to have a sleepless night, tossing and turning in

his bed? Explain

Answer: Mr. Sugihara was having a sleepless night because of the decision he had to make whether or not to issue the Jewish refugees visas. If he didn’t issue the refugees visas the Nazis might capture and kill them. If he did issue the visas the Nazis might harm him and his family.

3. What was the problem of the story?

Answer: The problem of the story is refugees are standing outside Mr. Sugihara house because they wanted him to issue them visa to travel east to the Soviet Union, but Mr. Sugihara knew if he issued the visas he would be placing himself and his family in danger.

4. What happened before Mr. Sugihara went outside to tell the Jewish refugees he

would issue visas to each and every one of they?

Answer: Mr. Sugihara’s family all agreed to help the Jewish refugees, which took a big weight off my father’s shoulders. He didn’t want help the refugees if his family did not agree, because he knew he would be putting in family lives in danger.

Answer: The climax of the story is when the Soviets ordered Mr. Sugihara to leave Japan

6. Why do you think the Soviet and Japanese government treated Chiune Sugihara

and his family badly after they left Lithuania?

Possible Answer: I think the Japanese governments treated Chiune Sugihara the way they did because they were upset with him because he helped the Jewish refugees escape from Lithuania even though they ordered him not to. The Soviet government were also upset with him, because they were coming to Lithuania capture them and Sugihara kept that from occurring.
7. Why did Sugihara receive the “Righteous Among Nations” award?

Answer: Sugihara received the “Righteous Among Nations” award because he risked, and finally gave his life to help the Jewish refugees escape Lithuania.

8. Why did Hiroki Sugihara write the Afterword on page 177?

Answer: Hiroki Sugihara wrote the Afterword as an adult to explain what happened to his family after they left Lithuania.
