Introduction

Nepalese Craft is famous in world, the skill and art has been appreciated by people from all over the world. Nepalese craft and arts present the history is ancient life and can be traced back to the Stone Age when human beings were inadequate to tools of any kind. We can see a lot of religious influence on Nepalese craft. Introduce by the Nordic Aryans, mixed with different groups of Mongolians, nurtured by Buddhist and Hindu concept adapted the test of market. The religious influence is not only the craft, there are too many of craft, which has different skill and art. Here are the craft Nepal produce, thangka painting, Pashmina products, woolen goods, wood craft, handmade paper products, metal craft, stone craft, crystal products, incense, jewelry, bone and horn products.

Exporting arts and crafts from Nepal to Australia is the research topic. Basically the art and craft from Nepal has made really small market in Europe and America. Australia is also a similar developed and culture and tradition as other Europe and America so Australia could be a next good market of Nepalese art and craft. It has probability of good market. It could be good idea.

Exporting Nepalese craft in Australia has great significance in economy and employment. And we can consider cultural exchange as well. Economy and employment is the main field that may positively effect. People get job and it create job opportunity in workshop and administration, customs duty. Yes if do export crafts to Australia as big export then economy of Nepal will boom. It will be good way to make revenue.

Background information about research topic

Basically the research we are going to do is the market research for particularly two goods. First is pashmina and second is thangka painting. According to the preliminary study Australia might have demand for these two goods.

  • Pashmina

Pashmina is a textile, made from wool. Shawls and scarf are the pashmina product. Generally we are well known about this pashmina. India, Pakistan, turkey and other country also make this kind of product. and they use the different raw material for this, some of use sheep wool, some use goat wool and some use silk. But the pashmina from Nepal is different than other. It is made from the yak wool and the people from different part from the world liked it. It is better than other because more warm. As important of yak wool shops write notice 100% yak wool. People in Australia may know about yak wool so I think it will be a good advantage of pashmina from Nepal. Even if you go in shop then you can find the information about Nepalese pashmina. Like some of tag 100% from Nepal and made by yak wools.

Opportunity and challenges of nepalese pashmina to export in Australia.

Australia developed and well fashion country. The people of Australia have good value of art and craft. People like wear fashionable and expensive dress. Scarf and shawls are into the fashion of Australia. People from Australia like to wear scarf and shawls and they have know the value of pashmina products. These kinds of products are into their fashion. In addition, pashmina from Nepal are different than other. It is made by yak wool. And it is handmade, no artificial colors. So these factors may gives competitive advantage to Nepalese pashmina.

Off course in the other side it has challenges. Government policy is the one of the main and the infrastructure and then technology. Government policies are not in side of this industry. Tax and vat are high as other export goods; the policy is not motivating the people. People get frusted because they have to pay high tax and price of product get high and in market it cannot compete with other cheaper product, like pashmina from India and Pakistan and turkey. Another factor that directly effect of the Nepalese pushmina industry is infrastructure. Nepal is landlocked country and it is quite difficult to do shipping. They have to use ether Bangladesh or India. To use the way they have to clear custom duty. And the main problem is long way, it takes 1 month to do shipping and consignment cannot reach at right time.

Due to poor information system the people are not known about the Nepalese pashmina. We do not have good advertise and promotion system. Only the people who have come to Nepal they know about the specialty of these products.

Here is an article; they have explained the pashmina from Nepal. Actually these people running a pashmina passion import business.

We are off to Kathmandu again in the next couple of weeks. Really love the buzz of this fascinating city with its mix of spiritualism, traditional cultures, western style and engagingly friendly people.

Nepal is the home of our exclusive Pashmina Shawls and Kathmandu is the centre where we see it all happen. We will have over a week of bouncing around on unmade holey streets, dust, dogs and streams of traffic everywhere. Kathmandu has had a population explosion over the last decade and this is providing the Government with an enormous challenge to provide all the infrastructure required.

We can’t wait to see those dyeing vats, the weavers, the spinners and all the people associated with making these luxurious shawls. Also I am hoping like mad to have the chance to race off into the foothills and find one of these extraordinary goats who supply this magical fine wool. Light as a feather and warm as toast.
This will be another great adventure – so follow us on face book and see the story unfolding.

  • Thangka painting

Thangka painting is a painting on cotton and it usually depicting the Buddhist deity. The main thing of this painting is art. It teaches tools when depicting the life of the Buddha, describes historical events concerning important lamas, or retelling myths associated with other deities. In this painting we can see the Buddhist religious influence. Australia has big respect to the Buddha because majority of Asian people. Like; china, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Nepal. So it is sure that Australia have good market for thangka painting. Not only as religious demand market, thangka is very artistic painting.

Opportunities and challenges.

In Australia most of the people are Asian based so if we can supply thangka in there then it might be one of the good market for thangka painting. I can the very big opportunity. And the aussie people do respect for every religious.

In other hand the cost of thangka might be a big issue. It is very costly painting. It takes long time to finish and labour are very expensive. It is not an ordinary painting; to complete thangka first the artist has to understand the Buddhist deities. So cost very high people may not afford it. And another main concern skilled people, there are very few people now days do this type painting. So they may not enough to full file the demand.

Opportunities and problems of Nepalese art and craft in Australia

As whole there is rarity of arts and verity of the crafts which can make market in Australia. Like, for the people who like ancient jewelry then we have that, people who like wood craft then we can make product with arts and the history. For the artistic and skillful good Nepal craft has very high chances in Australia.

There is good advantage of Nepalese craft. Because the craft or statue of Buddha and the mountain, the craft. The challenges are hard to shipping, due to infrastructure, lack of marketing, internet , lack of new technician, lack of technology of making way, so it make craft less costly less and the market will convenience. And train the people and everything is not as professional and the local are leaving the trade. Because of switching the good so the people are forgetting to make the craft, example is the most of the craft my plastic and the new technology.

The challenges are tough enough to ship these products to the different countries, due to lack of infrastructure, lack of opportunity/unwillingness for adoption to:- market oriented designs, production diversification, cross-culture innovation, advanced technology, lack of exposure to different market segments, lack of enterprising and marketing skill, non-conducive policies on utilization of forest and mineral based raw-materials, lack of proper branding of products resulting in duplication and lack of awareness and measures for quality assurance. So it makes the local products less costly less and market will convenience. Local people are slowly leaving this type of sectors to find better job and good money, which affects the craft sector to train new people to make them as professional as local people. As a result now a day’s most of the crafts are comes with plastic made or some different materials with machine made, which are not a real handicraft.

Research methodologies and techniques

Research is start with bunch of questions. It gives the answer that can we do export the art and craft from Nepal? or not Research questions to identify the problems and opportunities of arts and crafts from Nepal. Here is the questions that should be answers to find out the strengths and weakness.

  • Why Australia is the next big market for Nepalese art and craft?

  • What are the competitive advantages of Nepalese art and craft?

  • What kind of craft and art do Australian people like?

  • Which areas of the target market of Nepalese art and craft?

  • Who are the customer for Nepalese art and craft?

These are the rise at beginning of exporting the Nepalese art and craft to Australia. The answers of these make a basic way. We see that Australia is a big, develop country and our product may be liking in Australia and the people loved craft works and all ages and sex are our targeted market. So now we can start our research on people via different ways.

Here are the research method and techniques we going to use for the research project.

  • Telephone: Telephone is today’s one of the easiest and the useful research method. Every day we got call from the unknown person and they ask for your 10 minutes. Ether it is for donation for child fund or a package of sale, every company do use this method. So we also going to ask question about Nepalese art and craft and get their feedback from them and we going to proceed the next step.

  • Reviews old data: Reviewing data is one of very famous method to do research. Basically review data is batter then telephone. Some time people get bored in phone so from the old data we can know that what is the Australian people demand from overseas? We can know the changes in people’s behavior and the perception about carft?

  • Internet, Email: Internet is most common method of research. For example, facebook, from the facebook likes you can know that how many people like the good. People do comment on goods. Websites, people easily information about the goods.

  • Interview: There is another way to get peoples view that is interview. It is also a very common method. From this method people give their perception about the product

  • Brainstorming: The method is also provide the information about product and straight away get the feedback. It is a door to door or face to face data collecting method. Example, people in street and come to shake hand and start explain their plan and scheme.

Research process

Well we have made a survey model. It is the survey from email and internet for that we have website and the database to receive and send database. Probably it is the best idea to do survey to do from Nepal because we cannot go country to country, door to door and meet and communicate with people. we start it with developing some important question. For example, what did you like about this craft? Do you think price is affordable? What you recon about Nepalese craft? What is the improvement it need? What kind of craft people likes here (Japan, Australia, USA, and Europe)? And we slightly modify survey for branding purpose, to build the brand in particular market. We made some instrument and email to send random and the regular customer. That means we made a form and advertise in internet, when people open any web page they can see small advertises with that page. Example best price for soccer boots. So people can see those craft in every page and if interested then the click on it and they have to fill form with email id and then after we gate some email and data base then we Yes and email it response on that email and database.

Finally we got too many of response from the world, the way we do survey is the right way in these days because people use internet any time and for everything. So far what response we have got is positive and negative as well. People do like Nepalese craft and especially art and the crystal that we can found in Himalayas. They have welcomed to such ancient art and valuable and meaningful stones, and rest of the craft normally every country has their own. Example woolen products, metal craft, wood craft. And the difficulties on this survey is we have not made image or reputation on general life so people may think it is fake or not believe easily. Example is crystal, this stone are not on use generally so the people who do not know about crystal and it is not valuable for them.

Well the research is all about the possibility of Nepalese craft in Australia. My expectation on this research is to find opportunity and market of craft in Australian market. And demand of Australia and understand the culture. It was great to do this research with FRANK, he was monitoring me on this whole work.

Conclusion

Overall there are lots of opportunities and chances of Nepalese craft in Australia and the world market. Nepalese art and craft have that potential they are good and cheaper and religious influence. Pashmina is highly demand in Australia and thangka which has separate market for the people who knows about Buddha. Especially pashmina and thangka are the products which has most probability in Australia. As we know there are some difficulties to export those goods to Australia. If this industry gets the better working environment and government support and then the better information system then surely the industry has good future. It could be a good revenue source to Nepal.
