MANDALA PROJECT

MANDALA: A circular design containing concentric (like a bull’s-eye with rings), geometric forms. It symbolizes the universe, totality, and wholeness.

Drawing a mandala in its simplest form (a circle with an uncomplicated design) is a natural precursor to writing. Yes! This will lead to writing. The symbol of the mandala appears universally in the earliest scribbles of children and on prehistoric cave walls. The mandala forms a dominant motif in the mature art of every culture, from the Rose Windows in great Christian cathedrals to the sand paintings of the Navajo to the intricate mandalas of India, China, and Japan.
While creating a mandala, you will imagine, feel, observe, and analyze.

You will create metaphors and integrate them into your circular design.

You will weave sun and shadow metaphors into sentences which frame your drawing.
The sun-shadow archetypes arise from thinking about the dualities in literature and our lives. Our history is filled with philosophies that are built on concepts of opposites: good and evil, war and peace, inner and outer, the haves and the have nots. These tensions are what drive us and our storytelling. Without an understanding of these patterns, a reader misses a whole layer of meaning available to them.

Part 1- Sun Images

Answer these questions without discussing them with anyone yet. These questions may seem strange or hokey, but keep an open mind. If you follow the process, you will learn much about yourself and those around you.

  1. What animal are you most like? _________________________________

  2. What plant are you most like? ___________________________________

  3. What color are you most like? ___________________________________

  4. What shape are you most like? __________________________________

  5. What season are you most like? _________________________________

  6. What mineral or gem are you most like? ___________________________

  7. What natural element are you most like? (air, water, earth, or fire) _______

You may choose some variation of your element or the entire category.

Be air or be a tornado or a breeze: Be earth or be a mountain, desert, or beach.

These 7 symbols are your sun images; a sun image comes from the method of arriving at these images in a thoughtful manner, or in “the light of day.” If answering these questions is difficult, consider these thoughts:

PLANT
Are you a tree, a shrub, a flower, a weed?

Are you indoor or outdoor? Wild or domesticated?

Are you evergreen or deciduous?

Are you deeply rooted?

Do you require a great deal of care? Of food? Of water?

SHAPE
Are you angular or curved?

Are you a closed shape or open?

Are you regular or erratic?

Are you finite or infinite?

ANIMAL
Are you a carnivore or an herbivore?

Are you predator or prey?

Are you a protector? Social? Anti-social?

Are you nocturnal?

Do you move in packs or groups?

Part 2- Writing Sun Sentences
Now, write a sentence (starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation) for each of your specific symbols. You may use the following core sentence as you think through your main reason for selecting each of your sun images.
I am like the (sun image) because, like the (image), I _______________________.

Sample: I am most like poison oak because, like poison oak, I am harmless until I am stepped on.

  1. I am like _________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

  1. I am like _________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________
After you have generated your sun images and the seven sentences that elaborate on the relationship between you and your image, you’re ready for the mandala chart.

Part 3- Mandala Chart

Sun Symbol Most Like Me

Adjective Describing Column I

(one word)

Opposite Word in (Antonym) Column II

Shadow Symbol Most Like Column III

Animal

Plant

Color

Season

Shape

Gem & Mineral

Element

Column I-- List your sun images; these are the images you feel reflect you best when you thoughtfully analyze your tastes and temperament.
Column 2-- Put the one word that best expresses the single characteristic or quality that represents the underlying reason for your choice. Two students can choose the same animal for different reasons. A lion can be both powerful and voracious. This is a challenging exercise in vocabulary, and it can be difficult to find the right word to express your ideas. Use a dictionary or thesaurus for help completing this column.

Column 3-- Use your adjectives from Column II for each image, and find the antonym for each one. If a lion is powerful, the antonym for powerful would be weak. Weak is the word that you put into Column III. Be sure your antonyms are the same part of speech: weak is correct (adjective) while weakness (noun) would be incorrect in this case.
Column 4- If your shadow adjective is weak, what animal reflects weakness to you? This becomes your shadow image.

Part 4- Shadow Sentences

Following the same process as your sun images, look at how each of your shadow images can also reflect who you are. This represents the more inward aspect of your life. Although you may consciously see yourself as strong, when can you be weak? This step looks at how opposites can co-exist. Use the core sentence below.

I am like a (shadow image) because __________________________.

  1. I am like _________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

  1. I am like _________________________________________________________

Part 5- Drawing the Sun-Shadow Mandala

Within the framework of the circle, using colors and shapes but no words, draw and symbolize all of your sun images and all of your shadow images. Arrange them any way that you’d like. You may want to organize them in relation to each other or arrange them purely on how the shapes and colors look next to each other.

Artistry is NOT important here. Use symbols if you can’t draw. (A bear’s footprint can work for a bear. A horseshoe can stand for a horse.)
Helpful hint: Try drawing your layout on scrap paper first to avoid any unnecessary frustration. Then you’ll be able to transfer your ideas to your circle more easily.

Framing the Mandala (You will be given examples in class)

Write a single sentence using all of your sun signs. You may use the image itself or some form of the adjective to create an interesting sentence that has meaning. See how creatively you can weave all of these ideas into one sentence.

To complete your mandala, write both your sun and shadow sentences around the outside of your circle and cut out your finished product. You will need to turn in both your mandala and your completed packet for full points.

Targets
