Abstract. The name
Isophya tatrica Mařan, 1957, was used by D
OBŠÍK
(1959)
in the series ‘Key to the fauna of Czechoslovakia’ but the species has never been
properly described and the name must be considered as nomen nudum. Based on
the study of material deposited in the National Museum in Praha and designated by
Mařan as the holotypus and allotypus of I. tatrica, we confi rm his later assumption
(M
AŘAN
1958) that the specimens belong to
I. camptoxypha Fieber, 1853.

In the years 1954-1958, Josef Mařan (National Museum, Praha) revised numerous spe-
cimens of the genus Isophya Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878, from Slovakia and recognised
several unknown species. One of them was a small species from the Vysoké Tatry (= High
Tatras) Mts., provisionally
named Isophya tatrica. However, its valid description has never
been published unlike the descriptions of
I. pienensis Mařan, 1954 (M
AŘAN
1954) and
I.
beybienkoi Mařan, 1958 (M
AŘAN
1958). Later on, he wrote about
I. tatrica that ‘the unknown
species from the High Tatras and the High Fatra can be identifi ed as I. brevipennis’ (M
AŘAN
1958). Isophya brevipennis Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878, is currently a synonym of I. cam-
ptoxypha Fieber, 1853.
In the following year, the third volume of the series ‘Key to the fauna of Czechoslovakia’
was published, including the key to Orthoptera (D
OBŠÍK
1959). D
OBŠÍK
(1959) presented
I.
tatrica as a valid species, even with the year of description (as
I. tatrica Mařan, 1957) but
without any detailed comments. Since that time, no other reference to this name has been
published and the specimens labelled as I. tatrica by Mařan have not been studied (see H
ELLER
et al. 1998, 2004; K
OČÁREK
et al. 2005).
We have had the opportunity to study specimens associated with this name and resolve
their identity.

Material examined. SLOVAKIA: Vysoké Tatry Mts., Vyšné Hagy (6887), ca 1150 m a.s.l., vii.1956, , Moucha
leg., labelled as holotype of I. tatrica, Mařan det, coll. National Museum in Praha. Measurements: body 18.2 mm
long, hind femur 14.3 mm long, tegmen 4.2 mm long, 79 stridulatory pegs. SLOVAKIA: Vysoké Tatry Mts., Vyšné
Hagy (6887), ca 1100 m a.s.l., vii.1956, , Moucha leg., labelled as allotype of I. tatrica, Mařan det, coll. National
Museum in Praha. Measurements: body (without ovipositor) 16.0 mm long, ovipositor 8.1 mm long, hind femur
15.8 mm long; tegmen 1.7 mm long.
One of the most reliable identifi cation features, i.e. the number of pegs on the stridulatory
fi le (H
ELLER
et al. 2004), was not known in the 1950s (cf. M
AŘAN
1958). Based on the structure
of the stridulatory fi le, the shape of the male cerci and the length and shape of the tegmen and
ovipositor, the studied specimens can be clearly identifi ed as I. camptoxypha.
