Costume Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Costumes will be due on Monday, November 14^th. Your child will need to bring his or her costume to school and leave it in the classroom. Please put the costume in a clearly marked bag labeled with your child’s name and class. We will have a dress rehearsal before our performance, so it is important to turn in costumes promptly.

I have given you some suggestions for creating a costume. You do not have to follow these guidelines exactly; you are welcome to come up with your own idea. You can make the costume as simple or elaborate as you wish. If you are having difficulty, please contact me at [e-mail] or at [phone] and we will try to arrange something.

Costume Suggestions (continued on the back)

1. Roles of Pilgrims, William Bradford, John Winthrop, William Penn, All Colonists, Joseph Fish, John Appleton, Sons of Liberty Group, Paul Revere Group, Civil War Nurses Group, Pioneer Woman, Robert Fulton, Peter Cooper, Stephen Austin, Mormon, Brigham Young, Puritan, Quaker, John Fremont, James Marshall, Railroad Worker, Henry Clay:

Boys: Wear dark pants rolled up to knees, tall white socks pulled up to knees, dark shoes, either white shirt or dark shirt,

could add a vest or wide brimmed hat

Girls: Wear long skirt (any color) with a white blouse; a dress with a long, full skirt, could add an apron or a bonnet


2. Roles of Christopher Columbus, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, John Cabot, Juan Batista de Anza, All Explorers, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando De Soto, Martin Waldseemuller, Amerigo Vespucci, William Clark, Meriwether Lewis, Zebulon Pike, and Daniel Boone:

Boys and Girls: Wear neutral colored pants such as tan, khaki, sand, or army green either worn regularly or rolled up to the knee with tall white socks pulled up to the knee. Wear tan or white shirt. Could add fringe to pants or shirt, a vest, or an explorer hat or ‘raccoon’ hat.

3. Roles of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, John Adams:

Wear dark pants, either white socks pulled up to knees with dark shoes or tall dark boots/boot covers with pants tucked in, and a nice white shirt with vest that matches pants or a nice shirt that matches pants, and both may add a long jacket

4. Roles of All Soldiers: Wear long pants and long shirt or jacket, both the same color such as gray or dark blue, yellow or blue sash across waist, wide brimmed hat, may add white gloves, NO WEAPONS OF ANY KIND!!!




5. Roles of Chloe, Flint, All Native Americans, The Prophet, Sacagawea, Tecumseh: Wear tan/sand shirt and pants or skirt, moccasins or short tan colored socks, headband with feather, may add fringe to clothing, may paint geometric shapes on face



6. Role of Inge Svanhild: Wear a Viking hat (I have one she can borrow), brown/tan/black skirt (medium length) and matching shirt, sash around middle, tall boots or sandals, could add fur trim or cape



7. Role of Statue of Liberty: Wear a green dress with long sleeves and long skirt, or long green shirt with matching long green skirt, sandals, green crown (could be constructed out of foam) and torch (could be made of paper and glued to strong cardboard)


8. Role of Immigrants: Dress like the country you are from, wear all black and carry a flag from your country, or wear all black with a sash that says your country’s name. Flag could be made out of paper/ construction paper, glued to strong cardboard with a stick.

9. Dancing Groups: Wear any combination of red, white, and blue. I will have a vest for them to wear.

10. Roles of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Mercy Otis Warren, Susan B Anthony, Abraham Lincoln: (Abraham Lincoln add tall black hat, may add black beard)

Boys: Wear black pants and shoes, button down white shirt alone or with black jacket or vest or black shirt alone or with black jacket

Girls: Wear long black skirt or pants, nice white or black shirt, or black and/or white dress
