Unit 2 (Term 2) – Theatre of the Absurd

Unit Overview:

Students will develop and refine expressive skills in voice and movement for a range of forms and styles, performance spaces, types of staging and audiences. They will refine performance skills and explore production design and technologies for dramatic meaning and theatrical effect. They will learn how to shape and control dramatic tensions and action by manipulating the elements of drama in devised and scripted drama. Students will be able to communicate meaning through realistic and non-realistic performance styles and dramatic forms by manipulating the elements of drama. They will experiment with innovative and hybrid forms and performance styles, focussing on the Theatre of Absurd.

2	Investigate Existentialism and Surrealism and how this influenced Absurdism.

5	Explore Absurdism and its key theorists and playwrights.
6	Apply conventions of Absurdism through improvisation.
7	Present a polished performance of an Absurd Theatre text to a familiar audience.
8	Study Surrealist and Absurdist paintings to understand concepts.
9	Apply elements of movement, language, symbol and space to published excerpt.
10	Demonstrate a directorial conceptualisation with an Absurd excerpt.
