‘SC’ - National Officer Selection Committee


  1. Introduction:

The SSIO-SA will be henceforth be guided by the National Selection Policy developed for the nomination and appointment process for all senior officer posts in the SSIO-SA. The Policy will be approved by the Zone Chair and Chair: Prasanthi Council and will be reviewed annually.


  1. Extract from the Resolution of the 10th SS World Conference, 2015 – Point No.2:

Leadership in SSIO- The Leaders of SSIO should be exemplars of Sai’s teachings.

2.1. The Officers should conduct regular meetings with members to increase awareness of SSIO structures and its activities globally.

2.2. Delegates will present reports in their respective centres of the inspirational stories and projects from the conference and workshops to motivate member devotees into action.

2.3 SSIO leadership will conduct comprehensive training of Centre officers.

2.4 Ideal Sai leader should possess the following 4 attributes:

Ability (have the skillset to perform the task); Availability (have the time and interest); Affability (possess good nature and attitude)”. Accountability (are accountable to Sathya Sai Baba and the SSIO and so discharge their duties righteously, lovingly and with self-sacrifice for the benefit of all members and devotees).


  1. General Criteria for Selection - all Posts:

  1. Written Nominations must be submitted to the SC by the submission date

  2. Cvs be submitted and reviewed

  3. Comply with Charter of Sathya Sai Organisations and SSIO Guidelines. Must not ”wilfully deviate from the Code of Conduct laid down”.

  4. Should be exemplar of Sai teachings

  5. Have good understanding of Sai Teachings

  6. Possess the 4 attributes (4As) as stated above.

  7. Having served and performed a leadership role with reasonable excellence to qualify for the post. Review performance track record.

  8. Exercise fairness and transparency

  9. Should be regarded as an elder of the SSIO. Be a matured person. (‘elder’ -if applicable to a post)

  10. Having good character and personal record. Was not involved in any legal, disciplinary matter

  11. All nominations must be submitted on the prescribed ‘Nomination Form 1 or 2’ (see attached).



From SSIO Guidelines:

  1. Selection of Leaders and their Responsibilities:

  • They lead by example, speak obligingly and work with humility and love to build consensus whenever possible and to resolve differences of opinions amicably to avoid misunderstanding.




  1. Prerequisites for Officers: The necessary conditions to be an Officer of the SSIO are:

  • Have faith, devotion and unconditional trust in God in the form of Sathya Sai Baba;

  • Practice the Nine-point Code of Conduct;

  • Be a living example of Sathya Sai Baba’s teaching; and

  • Conduct themselves with love.



Note:

        1. Per Charter: Tenure of office bearers: All office bearers will ordinarily hold office for not more than two years, but are eligible for appointment for a further period of two years”. SC will check number of years completed in the current post.

        2. Per Charter – A Member is “Any person who is a spiritual aspirant, has faith in the teachings of Bhagawan Baba, and who is willing to abide by the Nine-Point Code of Conduct and the Rules and Regulations of the Organisation in force will be treated as a Member”.

        3. The former SSF members who re-joined the SSIO have been open and transparent in stating that they are not seeking official posts

        4. There should be Performance Appraisal process and ongoing review process for all appointed officials in terms of their mandates, terms of reference

        5. Selection of office bearers should not be based on familiarity or allegiance, but purely on merit and capability.




  1. Formation of National Officer Selections Committee (SC):

Br Shail Maharaj and Br Vishnu Moodley (appointed as Co-Chairs for independence, as they did not hold NC posts, current and present)


  1. Zone Chair is overall Head of the Committee.

  2. Zone Chair calls for SC nominations from the Interim Committee.

May also consider nominations from senior current and past National Council members.

  1. Set criteria for short listing of the SC Officers

      • select from the above criteria

  2. Zone Chair and SC Co-Chairs conducts -

      1. Short listing process – 3 to 5 candidates

      2. Interview nominated officers

  1. Zone Chair and Co-Chairs make selection.

  2. Zone Chair approves

  3. Selected member must attend induction and orientation process


Note: There will be an Observer Panel from former Senior Officers, approved by the Zonal Chair, to oversee certain processes. The SC will compile the list of Observers, as approved by the Zone Chair.


  1. Appointment of National President:

        1. Set criteria for selection of the Officers

      • select from the above criteria

        1. Zone Chair to coordinate the selection process under the direction of the Chair: PC

        2. Per the Charter: “The Chairman of every Central Council shall be appointed by the Chairman of Prasanthi Council on the recommendation of the Central Coordinator concerned”. (Note: in the absence of a Central Coordinator in South Africa, the Zone Chair will make recommendation.)

        3. The Zone Chair will call for nominations from the Interim Committee; and may also invite nominations from other senior national officers (past and present). (Use prescribed Nomination Form 2)

        4. Zone Chair, supported by the SC Co-Chairs, conducts interview process and make recommendation. Maximum 3 candidates.

        5. Zone Chair submit recommendation to PC with motivation and minutes/report to the Chair: PC

        6. Chair: PC approves

        7. Selected member must attend induction and orientation process facilitated by the Zone Chair




  1. Appointment of National Coordinators (Devotion, Education, Seva, Ladies, Youth-male & female):

        1. Set criteria for selection of the Officers

      • select from the above criteria

        1. The Zone Chair may call for nominations from the Interim Committee; and other senior national officers (present and past).

i. Members can nominate themselves.

ii Submit nominations on the ‘Nomination Form 2’.



        1. Zone Chair/SC conducts -

      1. Short listing process – maximum of 3 for each post

      2. Interview nominated officers

d. SC submits the name of the selected members with motivation and minutes/report to the Zone Chair.

e. Zone Chair approves selection



    1. Selected member must attend Induction/orientation process




  1. Appointment of Regional Presidents:

    1. Set criteria for selected Officers

      • select from the above criteria

    1. Zone Chair calls for nominations.

      1. Each Centre President to submit one nomination after engaging their respective members at a special and well-structured meeting, overseen by an independent person or person from the Observer Panel.

      2. Members can nominate themselves.

      3. The nomination shall be by “consensus of the members”.

      4. Centres submit details of the nominated candidate to SC on the ‘Nomination Form 1’ with minutes, attendance register and sign off as confirmation.

    2. Zone Chair/SC conducts -

      1. Short listing process from the list of candidates submitted by all Centres in the Region

      2. Interview nominated officers

    1. SC submits name of the selection member with motivation and minute to the Zone Chair

    2. Zone Chair approves

    3. Selected member must attend Induction/orientation process



  1. Appointment of Centre Presidents:

    1. Set criteria for selected Officers

      • select from the above criteria

    1. To ensure fairness and inclusiveness, the Selection Committee will invite nomination of members who have actively participated in Sathya Sai Centre activities in the preceding 9 months; and it will prepare a proposed list of nominees of those it considers to be suitable candidates to serve as officers”.

    2. Nomination (of 3 members) is by consensus by engaging their respective members at a well-structured Centre/Group meeting, overseen by the Region, and a member on the Observer Panel. “The SC may permit choices to be submitted in private chits (i.e. piece of paper handed out) when selection is taking place” p.26.

    3. Submit the 3 nominations to the Regional President on the ‘Nomination Form No.1’.

    4. Regional Executive and independent member conducts-

          1. Short listing process

          2. Interview nominated officers

    1. The details of the selection candidate with motivation and minute sent to the SC

    2. Zone Chair approves

    3. Selected member must attend Induction/orientation process


  1. Time Table: (dates reviewed annually)

27 Oct 2017 : Form SC (National Officer Selections Committee)

28 Oct 2017 : Zone Chair calls for Nominations – forward Policy to all structures.

13 Nov 2017 : Regions/centres submit nominations to SC

10 Dec 2017 : SC Interview & Selection (process completion)

17 Dec 2017 : Approval by Zone Chair

24 Dec 2017 : Announcement by Zone Chair

09-10 Dec’17 : Training/Orientation
