CASE 16
An incident during an internship
As part of the presidential program, a young woman undergoes an 8-week internship at a medium-sized enterprise in Germany, which supplies electronic components to large automotive companies. She is interning in the customer service department and is sharing a room with two German employees.
The cooperation goes smoothly, the women quickly found a common language. Together they are working on the results of a recent customer survey to find out how satisfied customers are with quality and on-time delivery. We have to process a large amount of information, so employees must be especially attentive; sometimes they have to call clients who have not yet sent answers.
In addition, there is little time left, since today is already Thursday, and on Monday morning all the data must be presented to management for discussion. Actually, this should have been done a long time ago, but the flu epidemic crippled three of the six employees in the customer service department. Therefore, the work took more time than was originally planned, but today, basically, it must be completed, and tomorrow we will only be engaged in preparing the presentation.
But today is March 8, and the young woman is expecting calls and congratulations, which she tells her colleagues about. They nod understandingly, although in Germany March 8 has never been a holiday. And then her cell phone starts ringing, every five minutes. She is congratulated not only by her colleagues, friends and relatives, but also by almost all colleagues from the group with which she came to Germany. With each new call, the faces of the German employees become gloomier. She holds the phone between her shoulder and head and tries to enter data into the computer in this position.
By the end of the working day, she had processed almost all the questionnaires that she was supposed to process, only five remained. This will take about an hour. Of course, on another day she would have stayed late and finished work, but today is a holiday, and she also agreed with her Russian colleagues to go to a concert. So she tells the German employees that she will come an hour early tomorrow to process these five forms. Colleagues silently nod. When she comes to work the next morning, these five forms are no longer at her workplace.
Assignment: What explains this behavior of German colleagues? How should the Russian participant have behaved?
