Bihar is facing its second successive drought in 2010

  • Bihar is facing its second successive drought in 2010

  • Series of natural disasters over the last four years-

      • 2007- witnessed severe floods in 22 districts of the State affecting 2.5 crore people;
      • 2008- the breach of the Kosi embankment
      • 2009- severe drought in 26 districts
      • April 2010- Cyclonic storm killing > 100 people and devastation to property.
  • Bihar is flood prone state; so this year’s consecutive widespread drought has magnified the adverse impact



Monsoon delayed by 2 weeks

  • Monsoon delayed by 2 weeks

  • Rainfall deficit in June was 32 % (seedling raising season)

  • Actual rainfall from 1st June to 31st July 392.8 mm against a normal 508.5 mm (deficit in rainfall 23%)

  • In South of Ganga- in all 17 distts rain fall deficit >20% (whopping deficit in Buxar- 70%)

  • In North Bihar- 11 out of 21 distts rain fall deficit > 20% (Sitamarhi – 60 % deficit)

  • Worst impact on Kharif crops- Paddy & Maize. Deficit: Paddy coverage – 62.33% & Maize coverage-21.88 %.

  • Other impacts- average increase in temperature; Fall in Ground Water table & Surface water reservoirs.

  • Reports received from respective DMs on prevailing ground realities

  • Recommendations by Secretaries/ Principal secretaries in charge in certain districts & Divisional Com of Kosi Divn. Based on field visits.

  • Govt on 03.08.2010 declared drought in following 26 districts:

  • Patna, Nalanda, Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Gaya, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Arwal, Nawada, Munger, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Jamui, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Banka, Saran, Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Vaishali, Sheohar, E. Champaran, Madhubani, Samastipur, Darbhanga.

  • In case the situation in remaining 10 districts worsens they may also be declared drought hit.
