2003 …and what a year it was!

Hey kids: December 31, 2003

No time to polish this if it is going out this year – and I have three parties to get ready for. The big things this year were my active voice and performance work, Brittonie’s employment opportunities, and Trystan’s graduation. So, off we go….
Focusing on my voice work, I was able to perform more, teach more, and consult more. My voiceover talent was utilized by many varied projects including publishing projects for ESL students, pharmaceutical industrial training videos (I am not a doctor, but I play one on TV!), and, speaking of TV, my big break came doing the promo commercials for TLC’s new show FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE. Each voice booking is exciting, interesting and still a thrill for me.

VO does not pay all the bills, however. I taught for John Robert Powers Modeling, Boston Casting, Vietnamese American Cultural Center, Allyn/Bacon Publishing - Pearson Education, Boston Language Institute, and the Actor’s workshop. In addition to many private clients, I was honored to present seminars for both the Naval ROTC Consortium and the USAF - Wright-Patterson AFB.

Additional honors came in my being selected one of 30 Extraordinary Bostonians and invited to a reception in our honor. I performed at the Boston Public Library at the Sonnet-a-thon in which each of Shakespeare’s sonnets was read in order. Several papers/websites quoted my pre-sonnet comment from the stage, “there should be more opportunities for more people to wear tiaras.” Of course I was sporting one at the time. Brittonie and I read in tandem at the James Joyce Ramble; an event in which costumed readers perform Joyce along a road racecourse and the runners applaud us as they run by.
My life continues to be a special event, and more and more costumes seem to be involved. As the Bear o’Ness, I wear a full size seafoam-green bear costume (half mermaid/half bear). The Bear Posse that I rampage with is composed of 50+ bears from all over the country (mostly NYC) and appears when you least expect it, looking for picnic baskets, vodka, hugs, and cops to hump! As a mergirl, I was featured on NY1 (TV) with the very very wet mermaids (torrential downpour) for the Coney Island Mermaid parade. On a drier day, we merfolk descended up the Gloucester Blessing of the Fleet, and at the opening of the restaurant Great Bay in Kenmore Square, I was the mergirl of honor. In less fantasy attire but plenty of sparkle, I continued to spin fire (poi) and refine my fire fingers. I participated in the Flash mob phenomenon that swept the country for a few weeks. In fact, my picture at the Boston event was picked up by a wire service and was seen in papers/news websites all over the world. For about three weeks I continued to get calls and emails from people who had recognized me (incl: Alaska, England, NY, PA, CA, etc.) in their papers or news websites (incl: AOL, COMCAST, Yahoo).
I am so very grateful for my friends far and wide and being able to visit them. Last New Years may have been an indication of how 2003 would go: traveling to a couple of parties around town thrown by friends from entirely different/diverse groups, ending on a loft rooftop with Boonesfarm, fireworks and more friends! NYC folks saw me sometimes three times a month, including the BLIZZARD (snowed in for several days), the big protest, Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade (complete with balloon blow up the night before, a fabulous view from my friend’s 44th floor Columbus Circle apartment, and a stroll in unseasonably warm weather to Times Square). Visiting Atlanta, I once again merged friends from different parts of my life (Saginaw, Lancaster, and Boston) and had a private tour of CNN for good measure. Following the most romantic trip of my life in August to Sicily, I nurtured “elephantitis of the ankle” at Burning Man in the desert near Reno, NY, but not before a friend escorted me around some amazing redwoods in northern California. A couple of Pennsylvania trips (one with a side to Balt/Wash) included Philadelphia to visit some old Renn Faire folks, mom and family in the farm country, Trystan’s graduation from Warwick HS (Lititz) and subsequent college parent’s weekend at Bloomsburg University).
The end of the year has been a bit like the Titanic (did I mention one of my tenents was taken away by homeland security? How about the complete computer crash? How about…) –not sure if I will be a survivor. BUT, I just came back from Florida, am going to Las Vegas next week for the AVN Awards (look them up), I am in the Ms Tall Boston Pageant Jan. 17th and… well– what the heck – I guess I will hit those parties tonight and if my boat goes down maybe a friend will hand me an oar!
(space here for Brittonie and Trystan’s letters – oops! They didn’t write them!!)
Check back next year – I may be wearing a crown and writing from Queens!

love ‘n’ stuff
