Reminder:  If you stop attending a class (or wish to drop a class) on or before May 17, 2017 for Spring 2017, you must drop the class yourself – officially – over the Internet. Failure to do so is likely to result in a failing grade in English 103.

English 103 is a university transferable course designed to develop and refine the student’s critical thinking skills.  Students will submit a minimum of four essays and a ten page final project paper; all written work must use proper MLA style and citation. Assignments are graded on the quality of writing and the depth of thinking evident in each assignment. This course relies heavily on access to the internet for quizzes, accessing the class home page, viewing assigned internet content, printing assignment sheets, and downloading many reading assignments.  If you do not have reliable online access, this course may prove to be more of a challenge than is necessary. It is my mission that you learn to think critically, on your own, and not replicate my thinking.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

(1) Write coherently organized analytical essays that demonstrate sound reasoning, the ability to clearly connect evidence to claims, advanced critical thinking strategies, and an understanding of conventions of scholarly discourse.

(2) Use critical thinking and advanced research skills to illuminate various political, social, ethical, and philosophical ideas.

COMMUNICATION DEVICES: No electronic screens are allowed in the classroom. All iPads, Kindles, laptops, cell phones, blackberries, and iPhones must be out of sight and turned off if brought to class at all.  Anyone using an electronic device during class will be asked to leave for the remainder of that day’s class and will receive a zero for all in-class work done that day. Classroom recording must have professor approval.

EXTRA CREDIT: The ONLY extra credit option for English 103 is participation in LAVC’s Service Learning Program directed by Mr. Rick Brossman in the LAVC Counseling Department. [see the Extra Credit link on our class website] Upon successful completion of your Service Learning commitment, where you work with people, plants, or animals -- and not papers, phones or screens, you may earn up to 50 extra credit quiz points  (2 extra credit quiz points per hour given in service).

STUDENT CONDUCT: Students are required to adhere to all Codes of Conduct as prescribed in the College Schedule of Classes, the College Catalog and all Regulations and Rules adopted by the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees.  Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, sexual harassment, assault, and discrimination. Plagiarism is the use of others’ words and/or ideas without clearly acknowledging their source. When you incorporate those words and ideas into your own work, you must give credit where credit is due. Plagiarism, intentional or unintentional, is considered academic dishonesty and is not tolerated. Anyone found to be plagiarizing or cheating on assignments (e.g., copying or giving answers, using ‘crib’ sheets, etc.) will: 1.Receive a zero (fail) on the assignment, and  2. Be referred to the Associate Dean of Student Services for further disciplinary action, following due process. Dishonesty, plagiarism, or otherwise engaging in cheating could result in a failing grade or suspension from class.

VETERANS:  Thank you for your service; if you choose please send me an email or come see me in my office to let me know that you are a returning veteran.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If you are a student with a disability requiring classroom accommodations, and have not contacted SSD, do so in a timely manner. SSD is located in the Student Services Annex, Room 175 or call SSD at (818) 947-2681 or TTD (818) 947-2680 to meet with a SSD counselor. If SSD has already sent the memo to instructor confirming accommodations required by student for this class, please meet with me to discuss arrangements.

PROCEDURES:

  • Feel free to come to my office hours in CC223 or email me at susanpierce@susanpiercelavc.com  any time with questions, concerns etc.

  • For your own protection, email a final draft paper to yourself in an attachment before turning it in.

  • All papers must be typed following the Eighth Edition of MLA Style Guide, in #12 in Times New Roman font [see class website].

  • Staple your paper in the top left corner.  No cover sheets are necessary.

  • Papers are due at the beginning of class.  Leave them on the table next to the lectern when you enter the room.

  • Please identify yourself in the subject line of all emails [Example 103.3, Erica Perez]

  • Only when absolutely necessay, email your paper in an MSWord compatible [.doc format].  In the email subject line type the class, your last name

  • and the assignment [Example: 103.2 Jones Advertising paper]

  • Lost, unreadable, or un-downloadable papers will be considered late and lose 10 points.

  • Email papers at your own risk. If you are absent and choose to email your paper, you are responsible for getting it to me on time.  The paper must

  • be emailed prior to the beginning of class, or it will be counted as late. I will reply to your email with “got it” no more than 24 hours after its arrival.

  • In order to receive an INC, no more than two papers may be missing.

  • Recommendation requests require at least two weeks’ notice.

GRADING: QUIZZES, IN-CLASS REFLECTIONS, AND ESSAYS

  • Grades are NOT negotiable and are figured on a percentage basis

  • All written work is graded on a 0 to 100 scale. Essays written outside class are equally weighted except for the final project, which is a triple grade.

  • All written work is graded on a 0 to 100 scale: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B;  70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, 59 and below = F

  • Grades are figured using a simple average of points earned divided by points possible.

  • Essays written outside class all have equal weight except for the final paper, which is a triple grade.

  • Daily quizzes on the reading material and/or on grammar, mechanics, and usage are graded on a 0 –100% basis. Combined quiz scores count as one full paper grade.

  • In-class reflections, assigned without notice, are graded primarily on content.  Combined in-class reflections, graded 0 -100%, count as one full aper grade.

  • The lowest quiz grade and the lowest in-class writing (reflections) grade are dropped when computing the final grade.

  • With the exception of the final paper, one paper may be turned in late, without penalty by using the Get Out of Jail Free card passed out in class.

  • Until 8 PM on 11/20/2017 when the Get Out of Jain Card expires: all other late papers receive a ten point late paper penalty; thus the highest grade a late paper can receive is a B.  Beginning at 12:00 AM 11/21/2017:, late papers lose 20 points and can earn no more than a C.

  • There are no make-ups for in-class work including quizzes, and the get out of jail free card cannot be used for in-class work.  In order to get credit, all in-class work, study questions, and film

  • guides have to be turned in at the end of class by the student; no late submissions or emailed work are accepted.

  • Essays that do not follow or respond to all of the assignment requirements receive no grade and must be rewritten to receive credit, no matter how well written. If you receive no grade on a paper,

  • schedule an appointment with me to clarify the assignment and to discuss the possibility of rewriting the paper.  Approved assignment rewrites are due the week after they are returned; late submissions lose ten points.

  • Papers using improper MLA style and citation, using first or second person when third person is assigned will lose points.  [See Hacker  Section MLA-33 a and b for guidance.
