2011 Lee Middle School Honors Day

Lee Middle School held its annual Honors Day Programs on May 26 and May 27 at the school’s gym. Sixth and seventh grade awards were presented on May 27 while the eighth grade program was held on May 27. Awards were presented for the fourth nine-weeks, second semester, and the year. The school holds awards programs four times a year after each nine weeks period. Before the awards program on May 26, Dr. Bob Heaberlin, principal of Lee Middle School was announced by Georgia Association of Middle School Principals Executive Director Hal Beaver as the National Association of Elementary School Principals VALIC National Distinguished Middle School Principal of the Year for the state of Georgia. Dr. Heaberlin will be honored with the nation’s other National Distinguished State Principals of the Year at a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Education and the White House in Washington, D.C. in October. Coweta County Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Barker and former CCS Superintendent Blake Bass spoke to the students, faculty, and parents as they honored Dr. Heaberlin for his accomplishments.

Listed below are the awards that were presented for the year.

The Coca Cola Outstanding Student Awards

The Coca Cola Citizenship Awards are presented to a male and female from each grade level team for outstanding citizenship and student leadership. This year’s recipients were sixth grade students Addison Burnett, Caitlyn McNutt, Bryanna Skelton, and Timothy Byrd; seventh grade students Katie Jones, Charlie Donnelly, Ann Marie Meeker, and Jason Brodeur; and eighth grade students Cary Holloway, AJ Alonso, Christiana Purnell, and William Lindquist.

The Coca Cola Student Academic and Athletic Award is presented to the eighth grade student who is an outstanding athlete and maintains a high academic standard. Sarah Katherine Palmer, the 2011 recipient of the award, participated in volleyball and soccer and was ranked in the top ten of her class.

The Coca Cola Fine Arts Award is presented to an eighth grade student who has demonstrated outstanding ability in the fine arts at Lee Middle School. Ji Young Baik, the 2011 recipient of the award, was an outstanding member of the LMS chorus and excelled in art while maintaining a high academic average.

The Coca Cola Academic Award is presented to the eighth grade student who excels in not only academics but also school leadership. Tyler Insolia, the 2011 award recipient, was a member of the LMS award winning band and attained an academic grade point average that placed him in the top ten of his class.

The Coweta County All Stars Awards

The Coweta County All Stars Awards was established during the 1988-89 school year by the Coweta County Middle Schools to reward students who had maintained good character, perfect attendance, and achieved the Academic Honor Roll for the school year. The Coweta County All Stars – Two Year Award

Seventh graders receiving the Coweta County All Star Award for the second year are Andrew Bolen, John Brimer, Jason Brodeur, Gavin Cordova, Jacob Crumbley, Noah Madden, Keeley Thompson, and Justin Reynolds.



The Coweta County All Stars – Three Year Award

Four eighth grade students were awarded the Coweta County All Star Award for three consecutive years. The recipients were Peyton Thomas, A.J. Alonso, Glen Lauzon, and Zachary Walker.



The State School Superintendent’s CRCT Award

Over 500 Lee Middle School students exceeded in at least one of the five content areas on the state mandated Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) for 2011. In addition one hundred twenty seven LMS students exceeded in all five areas (math, science, reading, language arts, and social science) on the test. Those students exceeding in all five areas and receiving the State School Superintendent’s CRCT Award were:

The Lee Middle School Nathan Hoffman Award
The Nathan Hoffman Award is presented to Lee Middle School eighth graders who have exceeded in all five areas of the CRCT for three consecutive years. The award is named in honor of Nathan Hoffman who attended LMS from 2006-2009 and was the first Lee student to accomplish the academic feat. The following eighth grade students were recipients of this year’s award: Ashlie Adamson, Haley Alain, Christopher Antrim, Tevin Brown, Blake Burgess, Tyler Insolia, Kaleb McLay, Joseph Milner, S.K. The Dr. Carol Turner Award

The Dr. Carol Turner Award is presented to the eighth grade student who has maintained the highest grade point average for all three years at Lee Middle School. The award is named in honor of Dr. Carol Turner, an original staff member at LMS, who was instrumental in developing the school’s awards programs. Hailey Alain is the 2011 recipient of this high academic honor.



The Dr. Robert E. Lee Award

The Dr. Robert E. Lee Award is named in honor of the former Coweta County School Superintendent for whom the school is named. The award is presented to the top academic average for the year in each of the grades six, seven, and eight. The 2011 recipients are: Stacie Evans (Grade 8), Melody Kiser (Grade 7), and Joanna Rodgers (Grade 6).

Young Georgia Author Competition

The Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia RESA’s sponsor the annual Young Georgia Author Competition. Shelby Zellen of the sixth grade and Ashlie Adamson of the eighth grade at Lee Middle School were the Coweta County winners at those grade levels.



The Jerry Davis Award

The Jerry Davis Award is presented to the middle school students who best exemplify the “typical” middle school student. The award is named in honor of Mr. Jerry Davis, the Coweta County Schools Associate Superintendent. Mr. Davis was one of the original middle school principals in Coweta County in 1988 at Evans Middle School where he remained principal until 2005. He is also a past president of the Georgia Association of Middle School Principals and was the 2004 Georgia Association of Educational Leaders Outstanding Middle Level Educator. The award is presented annually to a male and female from each grade level. This year’s recipients are sixth graders Joanna Rodgers and Sophie Haire; seventh graders Brennan Wilcox and Ryan Ashley Fuqua; and eighth graders Ann Cole Werner and Brandon Bonilla.



The John Dunn Award

The John Dunn Award is presented annually to a male and female student on each grade level based on scholarship, citizenship, and leadership. The award is named in honor of Mr. John Dunn who was a principal and associate superintendent in Coweta County for many years who contributed much to the success of the middle school program. This year’s recipients were sixth graders Jose Player and Laura Roden; seventh graders Joshua Henry and Leah Taylor; and eighth graders Elizabeth Mathews and Collin Morgenroth.


The Lee Middle School Heart of a Champion Award

The Heart of a Champion Award at the School of Champions™ is presented to students who have overcome challenges in life to be successful. This year’s recipients are Ryan Kennedy (Gr.6), Liam Brightwell (Gr. 7), Kacy Steiger (Gr.8), and Cole Croteau (Gr.8).



The Southtowne Motors of Newnan Spirit of Community Award

Lee Middle School encourages and promotes student involvement in the community. These awards are presented to students who are involved in volunteer work in their community. They are sponsored by Steve Mader and Southtowne Motors of Newnan in conjunction with the National Association of Secondary School principals. The recipients are: Calvin Boyd and Carsten Bennett (Grade 6); Jaelen Brown and Leah Taylor (Grade 7); and E.J. Ransom and Delaney Wallace (Grade 8).



The Kiwanis Club Most Improved Eighth Grade Student

The Kiwanis Club of Newnan and Coweta County presents an award to the most improved eighth grade student in each of the county’s six middle schools along with a U.S. Savings Bond. The student selected by the staff this year is Maria Cabrera.



Lee Middle School Most Improved Student Awards

The teachers at each grade level select one most improved student of the year based on academics and attitude. This year’s recipients are Deyatti Heard (Gr. 6), Raul Jaimes (Gr. 7), and Artavis Person (Gr.8).



The Lee Middle School Fine Arts Awards (Band, Chorus, and Art)

Lee Middle School presents awards in band, chorus, and art for excellence to eighth grade students each year. The 2011 Art Achievement Award was presented to Molley Blakely, Madilyn Veltman, and Emilei Ison by art teacher Crissie Singleton. The 2011 Chorus Director’s Award was presented by choral director Christy Hauert to two time all-state chorus member Aubrey Wood who helped the LMS Chorus again achieve Superior Ratings at the Georgia Music Educator’s Association’s (GMEA) annual Large Group Performance Ratings in Fayetteville in March. Band director Rusty Wilson presented the Band Director’s Award to baritone player Anna Weatherly and the Patrick Gilmore Award to Shelbi Miller who plays the French horn. Both of these band members helped the LMS Band earn Superior Ratings at Level 3 for the fourth consecutive year at the GMEA’s annual Large Group Performance Ratings in Fayetteville in March.

Mitch Powell Scholar Athlete Awards

The Mitch Powell Scholar Athlete Awards are presented to students who participated in at least one sport at Lee and maintained an overall yearly GPA of 90 or higher. The award is named in honor of the late Mitch Powell, former chairman of the Coweta County School Board of Education when Lee Middle School opened in 2006.

Lee Middle School Multiple Sports Awards

Lee Middle School honored students who participated in multiple sports during the year.

Athletes who participated in three sports were eighth graders Jairo Ruiz (football, soccer, and track), Noah Rutherford (football, basketball, and track), Mackenzie Crenshaw (volleyball, soccer, and track), SK Palmer (volleyball, soccer, and track), Lindsey Spooner (volleyball, soccer, and track), Adriana Williams (basketball, soccer, and track), Morgan Haase (basketball, soccer, and track), and Anne Cole Werner (volleyball, soccer, and track).

The athlete who participated in four sports is eighth grader Brittany Whelan (volleyball, soccer, basketball, and track). This was her second year to participate in four sports at the School of Champions. During this time she played on six CCMSAL Championship teams in these sports.

The Lee Timberwolves Outstanding Athlete Awards

The Lee Timberwolves captured four of the eight CCMSAL championships this season. Lee was victorious volleyball (undefeated), girls’ basketball (undefeated), girls’ track and field, and boys’ track and field. The Wolves were also the CCMSAL runner ups in football, girls’ soccer, and boys’ soccer. The Wolves won regular season titles in football, volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ basketball, and the CCMSAL East Girls’ and Boys’ Track and Field Meets. Selected as the LMS outstanding athletes in the various sports were Olivia Laaker (pep squad), Jessi Bartholomew (volleyball), Alex Branch (football-offense), Tristan Mann (football-defense), Jairo Ruiz (soccer-defense), Justin Sharp (soccer-offense), Lynnsey Danford (soccer-offense), Mackenzie Crenshaw (soccer-defense), Sterling Tyson (basketball-defense), Krishard Dixon (basketball-offense), Shemiah Sanchez (basketball-defense), Allana Simon (basketball-offense), Kevin Lashley (track and field), Adriana Williams (track and field), and Jacob Bergstrom (weightlifting).



Coweta County Middle School Athletic League Track and Field Records

The Lee Timberwolves girls’ and boys’ track and field teams set three new CCMSAL track and field records at this year’s CCMSAL Championships. Andrea Williams established a new CCMSAL 800 Meter record with a time of 2:27.50 and a new CCMSAL 1600 Meter record with a time of 5:35.39. The girls’ 4 x 400 Meter Relay of Katey Lynch, Mekhia Freeman, Jessi Bartholomew, and Adriana Williams established a new CCMSAL standard with a time of 4:28.20. In addition to the CCMSAL records several new Lee track and field records were set this year. Noah Rutherford set a new Lee track and field record in the discus with a throw of 136’4”. Sheridan Priest established a new school record in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:13.05. Kevin Lashley set a new Lee boys’ track and field record in the long jump with a jump of 18’3” while Jessi Bartholomew established a new Lee girls’ track and field record in the long jump at 16’5.5”. The girls’ track and field team won its third consecutive CCMSAL title with a 23-1 record in eight meets while the boys captured their second straight CCMSAL championship with a 24-1 record in eight meets. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams swept the Coweta Relays, the Henry Seldon Memorial Relays, the CCMSAL Meet, and the CCMSAL County Championships this year.



The Carl McKnight Timberwolf Athletes of the Year Awards
Each year the Lee athletic coaches select an eighth grade male and female athlete of the year. The award is named in honor of Mr. Carl McKnight, director of the Coweta County Recreation Department. Mr. McKnight has contributed much to the success of student athletes in Coweta County over the years. This year’s female athlete of the year is Brittany Whelan. She participated in volleyball, soccer, basketball, and track and field for two consecutive years. The male athlete of the year was Tristan Mann. He participated in football and basketball. Tristan was also selected to play in the Eastbay Youth All-American Football Bowl (USA vs. Canada Game) in San Antonio’s Alamo Dome on January 9, 2011. During the game, he scored a touchdown for Team USA.

The Blake Bass Award for “Perfect Perfect” Attendance

The Blake Bass Award is presented to students who have achieved perfect perfect attendance for the year. To achieve this honor, a student cannot have any tardies or be checked out of school early at any time during the school year. The award is named in honor of former Coweta County School Superintendent Blake Bass. The recipients of the Blake Bass Award for 2010-2011 were the following students:



Sixth Grade: Ashley Beil, Meghan Bouma, Haley Buttry, Timothy Byrd, Graham Caldwell, Rachel Copelen, Raeven Harris, Princess Hayes, Matthew Holloway, Frankie Prather, Laura Roden, Franklin Solorzano Suarez, and Tytiana Spencer.

The Coweta County Middle School Trophy of Excellence Winners

For the second consecutive year The Lee Middle School captured the Coweta County Middle School Trophy of Excellence. The award is based on a point system for each athletic competition and academic bowl competition. Lee won the CCMSAL volleyball, girls’ basketball, girls’ track, and boys’ track championships. They were CCMSAL runner-ups in girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, and football. The football team, girls’ basketball team, volleyball team, and boys’ soccer team won the regular season championships. Both girls’ and boys’ track teams won the CCMSAL East titles. The boys’ basketball team made the semi-finals of the CCMSAL tournament and the academic bowl team place third in the West Georgia RESA competition and sixth in the CCMSA tournament. The volleyball coaches were Robert Doyal and Shele Ferry. The soccer coaches were Brad Willems and Becky Bush. Coaching girls’ basketball was Jared Waggoner and the boys were coached by Pat Harris. The football staff consisted of Adam Daigler, Willems, and Harris. Bush and Harris coached the track teams with help from Lisa Redmon. The academic bowl team was coached by Suzanne Brooks and Redmon.
