Extended Abstract
Teaching programs are course-based mechanisms of experiences targeted to be attained by
individuals through school or afterschool (Demirel 2007). Consisting of lessons structured to achieve
educational, academic and pedagogical aims, teaching programs are effective in realizing the targeted
individual characteristics and future plans (Çomak and Güncegörü 2012). In Physics curriculum, it is
aimed to train individuals, who are interested in physics while questioning things, seeing physics at all
aspects of their lives, producing scientific knowledge using their scientific processing skills and
possessing the ability to solve problems (MEB 2013). Teachers, as the most important elements of our
system as the implementers of programs, are among the factors affecting students’ tendency towards
physics. For the implementation and future of the educational reform, they have essential roles with their
feedback (Mercan 2013) and they are believed to have great contributions in the literature through this
study, which aims to determine the opinions of physics teachers on the problems experienced in teaching
Grade 11 Physics curriculum topics and the latest physics curriculum to be implemented in the 2013–2014
academic year.
This study, which aims to determine the opinions of physics teachers on the problems
experienced in teaching Grade 11 Physics curriculum topics and the latest physics curriculum, made use of
the case study that allows for an interactive process between the researchers and teachers. The study is
participated by 20 physics teachers teaching Grade 11 Physics at 10 different Anatolian High Schools in
Çankaya, Ankara during the 2012-2013 academic year. Participants were determined through criteria
sampling method as one of the purposive sampling method. Teachers implementing the Grade 11 physics
curriculum as physics teachers of Grade 11 were chosen as criteria. A semi-structured teacher interview
form with 10 open-ended questions was also used as the data collection tool. The interview form was
prepared considering the opinions of three physics education experts in line with the latest physics
curriculum to be implemented in the 2013-2014 academic year. The form took its final form after taking
the expert opinions for the second time. All interviews, each of which lasted 20-25 minutes, with physics
teachers were made individually and face to face. The interviews were audio-recorded and the content was
later deciphered to electronic files. All data obtained through the data collection tool were analyzed
according to the descriptive statistics method.
According to the findings of the study, teachers indicated that “Force and Movement” and
“Modern Physics” were the most challenging topics for the students within the Grade 11 curriculum. The
reasons for these challenges were listed as the weakness in students’ mathematical operation skills, the
lack of time allocated to topics and inadequate laboratory activities. Additionally, as physics and
mathematics are strongly connected disciplines (Turna, Bolat and Keskin 2012), their teaching programs is
suggested to be parallel to each other, which could prevent the problems occurring due to lack of
mathematical operation capability. Majority of physics teachers reflected that previous learning
experiences affected their learning at Grade 11 negatively due to the lack of mathematical operation
capabilities and inadequate physics knowledge of students. In learning topics that are difficult to learn due
to conceptual learning aspects, attitudes of students towards physics were found to be quite effective as
another finding of the study. All studies in the field have concluded that students’ academic achievement
is affected by their attitudes towards physics (Martinez 2002) and it is a motivating factor for students who
would like to continue in this academic field after their graduation.
Teachers mentioned throughout the study that they used instruction method in their teaching
mostly and they preferred to teach challenging topics with problem solving and individual working
methods. Similar studies, in the literature have proved that traditional teaching methods were inadequate

in teaching physics concepts (Aydoğmuş, Sarıkoç and Berber, 2010). It is believed that teachers make use
of limited methods, techniques and strategies because of their aims to train students for the university
placement test. Physics teachers were determined to find physics related to three disciplines as
mathematics, chemistry and geometry. Students’ high performances at mathematics, chemistry and
geometry affected their physics performance while their low performances in the above-mentioned
subjects affected their physics achievement negatively. It was another finding of the study that it was
important fro teachers to communicate with their colleagues in teaching of the conceptual topics. It is
believed that teachers should not only communicate with their colleagues but also discuss these with
academicians of the field. Various studies have shown that the cooperation among the academicians and
teachers were quite inadequate (
Azar 2003; Dallmer 2004; Eraslan 2008; Gökçe and Demirhan 2005)
. A
large group of participating teachers indicated that the latest physics curriculum would not be adequate for
overcoming the issues of the existing program and may bring further problems. Their positive remarks
were on the increase in the allocation of hours to physics classes per week in Grades 11 and 12 along with
the simplified topics. Teachers emphasized their concerns that they were not consulted during the
structuring of the program, they were not informed adequately about the program content and the program
was prepared by academicians instead of the teachers as the implementers of the program. Teachers stated
that the new program would bring together the problem of adaptation and there may also be other issues
due to the inadequate information on the program. It is recommended that in-service training activities or
seminars on the latest physics curriculum would be useful for teachers to facilitate their adaptation to the
program.
