Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda - Brief Introduction

‘Guru Brahmaa Guru Bishnuh GururDeva Maheshwarah

Gurur Sakshyaat param Brahma tasmaishree Gurabae Namah’
Guru is represented by the Trinity Brahma the creater, Bishnu, the sustiner and Maheshwara, the Destroyer. Guru is Saakhyaat Param Brahman and I bow at the feet of my Gurudeva.
There are four Gurus in one’s life. Our first Gurus are our parents. A child learns the basic things of life in his formative years from his parents. The second Guru is our shikshyaa Guru (our teacher in school). This means we get material knowledge from him to lead a successful life in this world. Third Guru is our Dikshya Guru (for us our Sri Sri Thakur is our Dikshya Guru), who shows us the correct path in spiritual way to become a good human being. The fourth Guru is Lord himself.
Lord ShriRam’s Dikshya guru was Brahmarshi Basistha and Lord ShriKrishna’s guru was Sandipanee.
We should know about our beloved Shri Shri Thakur, our Guru who is guiding our family to become good human being with all virtues. He always thinks for our betterment and is protecting us at every moment.
Our Thakur was born on an auspicious day, Jhulan Purnima (FullMoon day- comes in month of August) in 1880. His parents were Bhubanmohan Bhattacharya and Manikasundari Devi. His childhood name was ‘Nalinikanta’. He had two elder sisters and four younger brothers. He was a very sweet child and was hence loved by all in the village. He was very good-looking, slim, and fair with radiant complexion. With passage of time he became somewhat naughty. But no one was able to punish him. Because looking at his sweet smiling face all used to forget their anger.
Nalinikanta was admitted to Dariapur Middle English School to continue higher studies. He had to stay in the house of maternal grandmother. His maternal grandmother and two widowed aunts (mother’s younger sisters) took well care of him. He was spending his weekends and holidays with his parents. He was very intelligent with extraordinary talent. He excelled the boys of his own age in the school and in the village. He was much ahead of his classmates in the school in respect of intellect and grasp over subject matters. He performed brilliantly in all the class examinations. He was always ready to help people from his village.
During his childhood Nalinikanta had several supernatural experiences. Once in chandi mandap, he saw Goddess Durga, which really frightened him. Then his mother explained to him that Goddess Durga is the mother of Universe. His sacred thread ceremony (this is a tradition for all brahmin boys) was performed at the age of eleven. His behavior during that ceremony indicated that he would become sanyasi in later life. Nalinikanta had respect for the Hindu customs and traditions of the scriptures. He devoted himself to religious practices like morning and evening prayers, worshipping God and Goddess. He was also interested in reading Indian epics, the Ramayan and the Mahabharat.
When he was only thirteen years old, his beloved and affectionate mother passed away because of Asiatic cholera. Her last message for Nalinikanta was “I am leaving this world surrendering him in the lap of the mother of Universe (Goddess Durga). This is my last blessing to him.”
Nalinikanta was deeply socked at this tragic incident. Cheer and smile almost vanished from his face. He looked grave and reserved. He even shunned the company of his friends and classmates, and preferred to remain in silence. In fact his spiritual life began after this incident. After one year he escaped from a tragic train accident, due to his extraordinary presence of mind in adverse situation.
After passing class eight examination, Nalinikanta decided to start his career as an overseer. For that he took courses in land settlement, land records, measurement of land, civil construction work etc. In those days a job was almost assured if one was trained as an overseer. So he enrolled himself at Ashaulla Engineering School. At the age of seventeen 1897 he got married to a thirteen year old very pretty and graceful Sudhansubala. After finishing his studies first he started job as a primary school teacher. He was respected as an ideal teacher and was liked by his students and people of the village. He was very active and energetic young man. He showed his literary talents in writing dramas, novels and poems. Later on he started his job as a supervisor in Narayanpur.
Next year his beloved wife passed away, which was a turning point in his life. He quit his job. Then he started searching for a Guru who can show him the right path for the quest of spiritual knowledge. Under the guidance of four gurus and with the blessings from Goddess Durga, Nalinikanta became expertise in four fields like Tantra, Jnana, Yoga and Prema. It is really difficult to become an expert in one field. All these were possible for his strong determination, willpower, great efforts and constant devotion towards his Guru.
During Jnana sadhana he had to stay in the ashram of a renowned saint Paramhansa Swami Sachchidananda Saraswati in Rajasthan. To test Nalinikanta’s patience and devotion Swami Sachchidananda used to scold him in harsh language. Nalinikanta began to follow all the hard and rigid rules and regulations of ascetic life there. He did all types of works like, cutting wood, cleaning utensils, cutting grass, cooking food, etc. He tried his best to please his guru and get his blessings. Swami Sachchidananda tested Nalinikanta rigorously by assigned him very odd and meanest jobs. Nalinikant performed these ungrudgingly. The food of the ashram consisted merely of flat bread (made with very coarse flour), buttermilk, and a sour item prepared with lots of chilies. Nalinikant had no hesitation and got used to such a hard life and peculiar food of the ashram. For few days he cooked food then he was instructed to cut and collect grass to feed the cows and horses of the ashram. Large size leeches were in the grasses, which was his great fear. One day he collected some leeches and placed them on his body. Thus the fear for the leeches disappeared. When this fear was dispelled from his mind, he was no more entrusted with that job. He was directed to collect firewood from the hill. One day he got injured in his leg while cutting a piece of log. From that day, the job of cutting wood was also stopped. After that he got the job of cleaning the brass idols of the deities.
When Swami Sachchidananda found Nalinikanta accustomed to the hardship of rigorous life in ashram and also his harse words and rude behavior, his heart was gradually filled with love and affection for Nalinikanta.
Here Nalinikant understood that God blessed the various people through a guru or a spiritual master only. Swami Sachchidananda himself taught the Vedantic philosophy to Nalinikanta. Under his guidance, Nalinikanta mastered all the Vedantic scriptures and became proficient in Vedantic philosophy. Swami Sachchidananda initiated Nalinikanta to become a sanyasi and changed his name to Swami Nigamananda Saraswati. After achieving Paramahansa status his name became Paramhansa Srimat Swami Nigamananda Saraswati Deva Paribrajaka. His devotees call him Shri Shri Thakur.
Per his Guru’s instruction Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda came forward to teach people the correct path to lead a perfect spiritual life. He helped poor and needy people through his ashrams and orphanage center. He guided his devotees with his advice and instruction, how to lead a successful family life where all members would love each other. He wrote his thoughts and principles in several books. People came to become his disciple by reading those books. Everybody loved and respected him very much.
Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda is in favor of raising children in loving environment. He liked to play the ball game and the train game with children. Sometimes he was also spending time in swimming, doing picnic (where Thakur was the cook making puri, kheer etc.) and telling moral stories to them.
Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda came to Puri, Orissa in 1922 to spend the last part of his life. He spent twelve years there. During this period very few fortunate oriya students came in close contact him. On 24th August 1934, his auspicious birthday, Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda founded ‘Nilachal Saraswata Sangha’ for uniting his few oriya disciples. He was also the creator of ‘Bhakta Sammilani’ (Conference of disciples). By his blessings now Nichal Saraswata Sangha has hundreds of branches in different places of Orissa and also in Delhi, Calcutta, Jamsedpur outside Orissa .
We are the most fortunate to have a sangha named as ‘America Saraswata Sangha’ far away from Orissa and India. We have been celebrating the annual conference (America Sammilani) in Labor day long weekends last two years (August 2002 and August 2003) in Minneapolis, MN at Gyan bhai’s resident.
Some people spend many years of their life in search of a Guru. But we are blessed with Guru when we are born through our parents. We have to love Him like a very dear person. We should follow his advice and instructions. With his blessings, we can be good human beings by achieving all virtues including peace and happiness. When we say JAYAGURU we remember him, pay respect to him, wish victory for everybody and above all get blessings from him.
Jayaguru.
