Invitation:
Jayaguru. I invite Shri Shri Thakura, all the kids and their parents to our next session to be held on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 11:15 eastern time.
Truti Bichyuti:
Jayaguru. On behalf of all the kids of America Saraswata Sangha, I beg for forgiveness from Shri Shri Thakur for any mistakes that we might have made.
The Friend “Bandhu” of Bandhu Mohanti
Long ago there lived a poor man named Bandhu Mohanti in Jajpur town of Orissa. He was a devotee of lord Jaggnath. He lived with his wife, two daughters and one son. He begged to feed his family. Though the family was poor, they lived happily. Bandhu always thought of the lord. He respected Brahmins and Saints. He praised the lord and was very compassionate to the human kind.
One year, famine engulfed the whole country. Many people died of hunger. Bandhu Mohanti didn’t get any alms after trying in several villages. In despair, he started to reflect upon the lord. At that time, his wife came to him and said, “The kids are very hungry. As a mother, how can I tolerate that? What can we do? How can we save our children? Please think about that. I don’t have anyone on my father’s side. If you have any relatives who can help us, let’s go there. No matter how long the journey may be.” Bandhu said, “I was a orphan. I don’t have any relatives. Then I have one relative in Puri, far away from here. There is no one better than him. If we can go to him, all our sorrows will vanish.” With his wife’s request, he started towards Puri with his family. He was holding the boy, his wife was holding one of the girls and the other walked in front of her. Bandhu was thinking that he would see the lord of the universe and his life will be fulfilled. After walking for four days they reached Puri. Bandhu went to the main entrance of the Jagganath temple and found that to be very crowded. There are people with canes to control the crowd. He could not get in. He saw Patitapaban and went to the south side of the temple with his family. He sat near the Pejanala, the drain through which the liquid leftover from boiling rice flows through from inside the temple. His wife asked, “Why are you sitting here? It is evening already and will be dark soon. Let’s go to your friend’s place and eat something.” The kids were hungry and started crying. Bandhu replied, “I heard that my friend’s house is very crowded. It is so crowded that one can’t get in. If you try to force in, the people with cane would hit you. Let’s stay here today and we will go to his house tomorrow.” Bandhu got some peja, the liquid leftover from boiling rice, from the pejanala and fed his family. Everyone fell asleep and Bandhu went to sleep thinking about the lord.
In the mean time, the priests in the temple finished the daily puja, put Jagganath to bed, cleaned the temple, closed the doors and went home. The lord of universe, Jagganath started thinking about his devotee, Bandhu. He got up and went to the storage room to get a diamond studded plate. He filled the plate with delicious food including cakes and reached the south side of the temple. He called Bandhu by his name. His wife woke him up and said, “Listen, someone is calling you.” Bandhu replied, “There may be several people named Bandhu at this place. Why should I go as I don’t know who is calling?” As he started to sleep, lord called him again, “O my friend Bandhu from Jajpur, the one who is sleeping with his family next to the Pejanala, please come here.” Hearing this Bandhu got up and quickly got to the person who was calling by his name. He saw a priest standing with a plate full of food. The priest gave the plate to Bandhu and said, “Take this and eat today. I will take care of you tomorrow.” The lord vanished after saying that. Bandhu woke the whole family up and said, “My friend came and gave all these food.” Every one ate the prasad. Bandhu then returned to the south gate of the temple and called his friend to give the plate back. No one listened. He returned to wrap the plate with a torn cloth and used that as a pillow to sleep.
Next morning, the priests went inside the temple to start the worship. They opened the storage to see that the diamond studded plate was missing. The keeper of the temple put the guard of the temple in the prison. Everyone started looking for the plate. The plate was sparkling under Bandhu Mohanti’s head. A passerby saw the plate and reported to the keeper of the temple. People gather around there and started beating Bandhu. He said, “I didn’t do anything wrong. Someone from the temple came here yesterday and gave me a plateful of food. I wanted to return the plate and no one was there to take it from me.” His wife said the same thing. No one believed them. They tied Bandhu up and put him in a jail. In the prison, Bandhu thought of lord with tears rolling from his eyes, “Lord, I am a small servant of yours. I don’t know why you punished me. I will endure any punishment that you give out.”
That night, Lord Jagganath came in King Prataprudra’s dream and said, “One of my friend, Bandhu Mohanti, came to my house with a lot of devotion. I gave him food on my diamond studded plate. That plate was with him. People thought that he was a thief. They beat him and put him in the jail. I want you to release him immediately and give him food and clothing. I want you to take care of him for rest of his life.” The king woke up and left his palace in Cuttack to go to Puri on a horse. After reaching Puri, he straight went to the jail and released Bandhu. He embraced Bandhu and said, “I saw the lord in my dream because of you. My life is fulfilled. Please forgive me for all the mistakes these guys made.” The king gave him expensive dress after Bandhu took a bath. The king put a silk cloth as a hat on Bandhu’s head and gave him a job at the temple to serve the lord. He gave Bandhu a house on the south side of the temple and arranged food for rest of his life.
With grace of Lord Jaggnath, all sorrows of the lord dependent Bandhu Mohanti were removed. He lived very happily and served Jaggnath for rest of his life.
