Simon Gleave

===============================================================================
I first hatched the idea of putting together a comprehensive document to cover

all aspects of the World Cup when I saw Eric Visser's guide to the Asian World

Cup qualifying tournament last October. It struck me that as England were

effectively out, I could view this year's tournament on an unbiased level and

therefore write a preview of the World Cup which would be balanced. In addition

to a simple preview, I thought it would be a good idea to persuade the

international community of RSS to write articles about their own national sides.

This would be a fairly unique way of looking at the World Cup finals.

I was fairly pessimistic about getting these country profiles in time, but I was

also worried that certain countries would be impossible to get hold of. The

latter fear proved well founded as I was unable to find anybody to write on

Bulgaria, Cameroon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Russia, but 19 out of 24 isn't

bad and some of the profiles are quite superb, giving an insight that we

wouldn't otherwise have.

I have left the profiles in the style in which they were written, and have only

corrected for English and brevity (in some cases). There is information on the

five nations that were not collected, kindly sent to me by Tim Aitchison. I'd

also like to thank the multiplicity of contributors without whom this could

never have been written.
So, enough of me, you want to know what's contained in this document that has

taken nearly 9 months to put together, don't you?

Oh, I should just finally say that if you think improvements can be made, please

e-mail me and I'll try to update things before the finals start on June 17.

VENUES FOR WORLD CUP 1994
Greg Keklak
===============================================================================

(A) denotes stadium with artificial surface, e.g. AstroTurf, which will be

covered with grass for World Cup play.
An asterisk highlights notes of special significance to WC'94.
In each case, the capacity shown is for American football. Capacities for World

Cup matches may differ from those shown below.

"Football" in the notes below should be understood to mean American football.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSTON (Groups C and D):

Foxboro Stadium, Foxboro, Massachusetts, (cap. 60,794)

Home of New England Patriots (NFL)
Site of U.S. victory over England, U.S. Cup 1993 *
Stadium originally named Schaefer Stadium after Brooklyn-based brewery which

partially funded construction of the stadium - has also been known as Sullivan

Stadium, named for Billy Sullivan, former owner of New England Patriots

franchise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY (A) (Groups E and F):

Giants Stadium (The Meadowlands), East Rutherford, New Jersey (cap. 77,301)

Home of New York Giants and New York Jets (both NFL)
Former home of defunct New York Cosmos (NASL)
The Meadowlands complex also includes facilities for harness racing and an

arena for ice hockey and basketball - capacity crowds were common for Cosmos

matches in the 1970s as fans came out to watch Pele, Beckenbauer, Chinaglia and

others in NASL action.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON (Groups E and F):

Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (RFK), Washington, D.C. (cap. 56,454)

Home of Washington Redskins (NFL)
Named D.C. Stadium when opened, but was renamed after 1968 assassination of

then presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy - also used as a baseball stadium

by Washington Senators (AL) until franchise moved to Arlington, Texas in 1971.
With one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL, the Redskins' ownership is

looking to replace RFK with a 70,000 seat stadium in the near future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ORLANDO (Groups E and F):

Citrus Bowl, Orlando, Florida (cap. 70,000)

Home of Univ. of Central Florida football team (NCAA Div. I-AA)
Site of annual Florida Citrus Bowl (college football)
Former home of defunct Orlando Thunder (WLAF)
As recently as 1971, the Citrus Bowl had a capacity of only 9,000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHICAGO (Groups C and D):

Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois (cap. 66,950)

Home of Chicago Bears (NFL)
Site of opening ceremonies *
Opened in 1920, Soldier Field is the oldest stadium in use in the NFL - stadium

originally built as an elongated oval seating 100,000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DETROIT (A) (Groups A and B):

Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan (cap. 80,500)

Home of Detroit Lions (NFL)
First indoor venue in World Cup history - site of first international match

held indoors on grass (Germany v. England, U.S. Cup 1993)

Fans enter and exit through revolving doors to prevent the air pressure which

supports the roof from escaping the building

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DALLAS (A) (Groups C and D):

Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Texas (cap. 71,615)

Site of annual Cotton Bowl (college football)
Former home (1960-1972) of Dallas Cowboys (NFL)

SAN FRANCISCO (Groups A and B):

Stanford Stadium, Palo Alto, California (cap. 85,500)

Home of Stanford University football team (NCAA Div. I-A)

Has served as site for Super Bowl (NFL championship)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOS ANGELES (Groups A and B):

Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California (cap. 99,563)

Home of UCLA football team (NCAA Div. I-A)
Site of annual Rose Bowl (college football) and has hosted Super Bowl
Site of World Cup final match *

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A note on the grass pitches to be used at stadiums with artificial surfaces:
It is my understanding that the stadiums with artificial surfaces will be

covered with grass much as the grass pitch was put into place in the Pontiac

Silverdome for the US Cup last summer. Sections of grass are grown at a remote

site in a sort of greenhouse, and then the sections of grown grass are shipped

via refrigerated truck to the stadium(s). While I am not an expert on such

groundskeeping matters, the grass installed over the turf at the Silverdome

looked good and appeared to hold up well under the feet of the Germans and

English.

The process is expensive, but if it is consistantly successful, this will be a

large step towards eliminating the need for artificial turf, which has been

shown to be a factor in increased injuries in American football.

TRIVIA RELATED TO THE WC FINALS - USA 94

Stephen Halchuk

===============================================================================
FIRST TIME MEETINGS AND REMATCHES:
27 of the 36 first round pairs of opponents in WC94 have never met each other

in a World Cup final tournament before. Of the 9 games that have been played

in WC finals before, the longest wait for a rematch is Italy v Norway, who last

met in a WC in 1938 (2:1 in favour of Italy)

4 of the first round matches are grudge matches from Italia 90 (1990 results in

brackets)

Brazil v Sweden (2:1)

Russia v Cameroon (4:0)

Italy v Ireland (1:0)

Spain v South Korea (3:1)

When Saudi Arabia plays Morocco on June 25, It will mark the first time in a WC

final tournament that an African team has played an Asian team.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MULTIPLE MEETINGS:
Several pairs of teams appear to meet each other in the finals with alarming

regularity. The most consistent recent matchup is Italy and Argentina, who have

met each other in the past 5 consecutive WC finals (74, 78, 82, 86, 90)!

Other 5 time matchups are:

Brazil v Spain (34, 50, 62, 78, 86)

Brazil v Czechoslovakia (38, 38, (a replay was required to decide the first

game), 62 (first round), 62 (final match), 70)
Brazil and Sweden will join this group of 5 time matchups after their first

round game in Detroit, having already met in 50, 58, 78, and 90.

Other possible 5 time meetings after this summer's finals are:

Germany v Argentina (58, 66, 86, 90)

Germany v Italy (62, 70, 78, 82)

Italy v Brazil (38, 70, 78, 82)

No two teams, to my knowledge, have met each other more than 5 times in the 14

WC finals.
